RACING FOR CHARLESTON TRACK TO BE BUILT FOR MEETING OF SEVENTY-FIVE DAYS BEGINNING JANUARY 10. F. J. Pons Makes Authoritative Announcement That Work on New Course jn South Carolina Will Start at Once Minimum Purse 400. Louisville, Ky., October 13. Charleston, S. C, will bo the scene of a winter race meeting, beginning January 10, 1012, and continuing seventy-five days until April 5. This welcome announcement was authorized today by F. J. Pons, who was prominent in the conduct of winter racing at Jacksonville, Fla., and who has been active in interesting capital in the proposed venture at Charleston. Mr. Tons is emphatic in his declarations that arrangements have proceeded to the point where there need be no fear of the successful consummation of tlie project. Horsemen, he says, may absolutely count on the ability of the new racing association to make good on all its promises. Track construction work will begin at once. The course will .be of the regulation mile type, up-to-date in its appointments and conveniently located. There is abundant time between now and the announced date of opening for the building of the plant in a proper manner. Mr. Pons announces that the minimum purse will be of 00 value, with a plentiful sprinkling of 1911.sh00 handicaps. The stake program will be made up of some twenty events, ranging in value from ,000 to .,500. It is altogether probable that a Derby and one other particularly valuable event will bo provided as special attractions. The preliminaries incidental to the actual beginning of work on the new course are already being attended to and the project will go forward with a rush from now on. Needless to say, horsemen are delighted over the prospect of increased opportunity for, winter racing.
