GROVER HUGHES IMPROVES SUDDENLY. Beats First-Class Opposition in Six-Furlongs Handi, cap at Churchill Downs. Louisville, Ky., October 13. Sir Cleges was the only winning favorite at Churchill Downs this afternoon. Track conditions were somewhat deceptive. The goiug was good on the surface, but moist beneath. The handicap at six furlongs, which engaged a smart field, resulted In the greatest upset ot the afternoon. Grovcr Hughes won the race with Jim Basey second and Follie Levy a trailer. The showing of Grovcr Hughes today was in marked contrast to his previous effort. Another disappointment followed in the succeeding race when Wheelwright, the best hacked favorite of the day. succumbed to T. P. Hayes Three Links. The winner showed a really good performance and scored in easy fashion. AAander and Sigurd had a stirring struggle in the closing dash, the Flynn representative just lasting to get the verdict. Jockey Denny on the runner-up lodged a claim of foul on the ground of haviug been impeded in the stretch by the winner, but the judges did not allow it. Amoret ran a greatly improved race, and scored easily over Star Blue and John Griffin II.. with Chapultepec next. The last named would have been a much more serious contender with a stronger rider. Jenny Geddes, recently acquired by Green B. Morris, and running in the interest of L. M. Morris, beat an ordinary band of two-year-olds at one. mile, the first mile race for two-year-olds ruu during the meeting. Fine weather was again responsible for a big attendance. A record-paying two-horse- mutuel combination developed as a result of the. success of Amoret aud Jenny Geddes. Only one ticket was out on the pair and the holder received 1911.sh2S.90 -for . Johnson N. Camden, members of the Kentucky State Racing Commission, who has been in frequent attendance at this meeting and is a clcse observer, went cn record today in opposition to the rule barring telegraph service from the Kentucky tracks to newspapers. He telegraphed, on his own initiative, to Chairman Clay that the rule does not accomplish what it was intended for and that it is ineffective and detrimental, to the best interests of racing. He recommended that it be annulled at once and that the telegraph service be reinstated at the tracks with a censor. George J. Long is another member who favors the restoring of the telegraph service for the accommodation of the newspaper men. Indications are that the telegraph office will be allowed to re-open at the Latonia track. Harry F. Breivogcl, who has been seriously ill, was among todays arrivals and looks to be in fairly good health. lie is prepared to resume his duties and will leave on Monday nest on the special for Mexico City to act as assistant manager at Mexico City and later at Juarez. Another arrival who will depart on tho special for Mexico City is Wendel Cassidy, eldest son of starter Cassidy. George Odom today attached Swaiuianoa and tho money in the associations office due to E. C. Cowdin. Mr. Odom claims that Mr. Cowdin is indebted to him in the sum of for training Swanuanoa and The Pippin. The stories spread broadcast that a wire tapping job had been pulled off here yesterday in the first race seems to . bo unfounded. Tho poolroom information agents made a mistake1 in sending out "2" instead of "12," Mycenaes number. Rudolfos number was two. The mistake was corrected almost immediately. The following were among the "best work-outs this morning: Aimee Early Five-eighths in l:04i. Aviator Mile in 1:47. G. M. Miller Mile in 1:435. Jack Wall Five-eighths in 1:07.
