BLACK BRIDGE WINS LAUREL FEATURE. Laurel, Md., October 14. A large crowd visited , the Laurel track this afternoon. The Chevy Chase , Steeplechase Handicap with Gentlemen riders in hunting costume was the chief feature, aside from a novelty contest. Of the eight carded in the Chevy Chase, only three responded to the bugle call. The Welkin ruled an odds-on choice, but her showing was disappointing. Black Bridge was able tn take the lead a half mile from the finish, and : drawing out in the stretch, won by six leiifths. The Welkin was under the stoutest kind of pull for two miles, but when let down for the final struggle weak- , ened. It was given out last night that jockey Byrne was in a bad way, as a result of his fall from Capitan Bravo. It now turns out that the report was in- correct. While Byrne was unconscious for a con- , siderable time, lie is all right beyond a shaking up. and it is said that he will be able to leave the hospital on Monday. Jockey J. Wilson, who is under contract to J. W. Schorr, was taken to Washington yesterday and operated on for appendicitis. , Joe McLennan reports that the stakes for the meeting at Norfolk, which had their closing on Friday, have filled well. K. Mllburn and II. Flippeu have sent their horses from Pimlico to the Benning track, so they can race at Laurel. II. C. Airhart arrived here from Toronto with a string of nine horses. Fred Cook and John Walters were among those who witnessed todays races. F. J. Pons arrived here today from Charleston, where there will bo a winter meeting beginning January 10.
