HILARIOUS DISAPPOINTS AT LAUREL. Cliff Edge Wins Handicap Feature of an Interesting ProgTam at New Track. Laurel, Md., October 17. There was mixed racing here this afternoon. First three trotting events were decided and then came the running races. The first-named events hegan at eleven oclock and were finished up shortly before the running of the opening running race, so that it did not interfere with the thoroughbred program in any way. Both branches of the sport brought out interesting contests and. notwithstanding the cloudy weather, a large crowd was on hand. Of the six running races decided, chief interest centered in the handicap jit one mile, but it was a disappointing race all the way. even tnough the winner. Cliff Edge, was a well-backed contender. To begin with, Star Charter, the Schorr entry, was unfortunate enough to have his mouth caught in the barrier when the signal to go was given, consequently he was practically left ut the post and his running during the race, when he was sent along after llie others, would have led one to believe that lie would have been a stroug contender but for the mishap. Then Hilarious, James R. Keenes crack colt, which ruled an odds-on favorite for tiie race in spite of his heavy. Impost, ran a race of the most disappointing kind. For the first tliree-eighths of a mile he had his usual speed, but in the run up the backstretch CHIT Edge shot past him like a flash. It was an easy matter for Cliff Edge to hold his advantage for the remainder of the journey. When Cliff Edge passed Hilarious it seemed to take the courage out of the Keene colt, for he pinned back his cars and sulked. He ran out rounding the far turn, which put him out of the running and Goldstein wisely eased him tip in the stretch run, so that Hilarious was a bad last at the finish of the race. It. E. AVatkins has met with success since he transferred his stable from Pimlico. as his first entrv. Lad of Langden, was a winner yesterday, while Cliff Edge was his second. Although the meeting at Marlboro is almost two weeks away as yet, the horses are beginning to arrive at the track. The first lot reached there on Monday when three carloads arrived from Toronto. Another carload will leave Toronto today and more will follow towards the end of the week. The officials that will take part in the meeting have been announced ut follows: 1. A.
