STAKES TO BEYER WYCK STABLE. Sir John Johnson and Aldrian Finish First and Second in Washington Handicap at Laurel. Laurel, Md., Octolier 21. Rain which fell this uiorning was responsible for the going at Laurel tills afternoon being heavy, so the trotting and novelty events could not be held. The last-named will take place on Monday should the track be in proper condition. The management had a little luck, how-over, as the weather cleared at noon and a large crowd made the trip to the course. The sport was Interesting, even though the track was heavy. Thirty-two books went on, thirty of them being iu the big ring nnd it was announced that this will-be. the limit number permitted to ;do business at the track. The steeplechase race, in which ofiiccrs of the Army and Navy had mounts, was to have been the days big event, but it had only three starters. .Still, it furnished plenty of excitement even if two did fall, leaving Knight of Elway to gallop over the course alone. When O. K. and Miss flynes went down, Lieut. Alexander was knocked out for a time so .that ue made no effort to catch Miss Hynes, but Lieut. Rockwell gave a game exhibition on O. K. and deserved the ovation he received when he brought his mount home and took second money. After Lieut. Rockwell remounted O. K., his gelding refused at nearly every juuip, but he kept him at it. The Washington Handicap was the chief Rice on the fiat and the lSeverwyek Stable took first and second money in the race with Sir John Johnson and Aldrian. The first-named led all the way, but his stable comuanion could have beaten him home had his rider desired. Star Charter ran a great race, as he was knocked out of it at the start, while the same thing happened to Lawton Wiggins. Hilarious broke through the barrier at the start and shortly afterwards , his saddle slipped. Gould tried hard for a mile to bring the colt to a stop, but finally slid off. Hilarious then ran around the track and into one of the stables where he was captured and brought back to the post. Little Ep and Mad River changed hands after Little Ep won, O. J. Odcll bid him up and took him for ,000 and then J. W. Hcdrick claimed Mad River from Samuel Ross. The stakes for the meeting at Norfolk have filled well, the number of nominations being: Monticcllo, 50; Excelsior. 52; Lynhaven, 45; Thanksgiving, 41; Merchants, 51. P. S. I. Randolph was at the track to see Plate Glass run in the stake race and was disappointed by. his horses poor showing. Mylcs OConnell, winner of the fifth race, was run up 05 after his victory, and was retained by his owner.
