ENGAGEMENTS OF CRACK JOCKEYS. Rarely do I indulge in the repetition of casual gossip, but here must be made an exception, owing to the great interest which would center iu the rumor if perchance founded oh fact, as seems not unlikely. It has been represented to me that Woot-tons resignation of the Stanley House claim is in the main due to the bright prospect of Lomond training ou into the winner of the Derby. His riding days are probably numbered, for Nature has asserted herself, and from a little lad he seems all of a sudden to have sprung into a man. still growing so fast that he looks like qualifying for a place iu his Majestys Life Guards. It remains only for him to ride the winner of the Derby to set the seal ou his fame as one of the most brilliant jockeys that ever sat in a saddle, and those who can read lKitwcen the lines will take it as the tip direct that next year Mr. E. I hi I ton will have first claim, conjointly with his fathers stable, on his services. Outside that I understand that ho will ride as a free lance, and in so doing will lie wise in his generation, for he is in a position to command enormous fees for chance mounts, so eager is the demand for his services. But although there will bo no: definite retaining fee he will, 1 believe, after his own stable, give prefer enee to Mr. J. B. Joel, for whom he has lately been riding with marked success. With all reserve, another startling rumor to the effect that under the advice of his trainer Richard Wootton, who presumably does not consider the ground at his disposal suitable for the purpose, Mr. Hulton contemplates transferring Lomond from Epsom to Letcombe Regis ti be prepared for next years engagements by that past-master of the art, Charles Morton, who has already White Star to go ou with. Maher will ride first again for Lord Rosebery next year, but whether Mr. Leopold de Rothschilds second claim will be renewed has not yet been determined. As has been previously announced, young Rickaby will succeed Wootton as first jockey to Lord Derbys Stanley House Stable, to which he was originally apprenticed. "Vigilant," iu Loudon Sportsman.
