; : AZYIADES BRILLIANT CONSECUTIVE STRING OF EASILY ACHIEVED VICTORIES 4. : With a good private reputation, Azyiade made her first venture in public racing at Churchill Downs on the thirteenth day of last May in a half mile dash. At the end of the race Mary Emily had given her lifleen iwiiiids and a length beating, but such a crack as Calisse was third and the race had been rim In such fast time as 47, so it might well be said to be a satisfactory debut. Of her succeeding twelve races Azyiade won three, was twice second and five times third, a record that showed her to be nearly always battling out the finishes of her races, even if not strikingly successful. However, when autumn racing came on it was a different story and Azyiade went iuto winter quarters with the well earned reputation of being the best two-year-old filly of the western turf. Tills came from a brilliant sequence of seven consecutive races won against good opposition and, as a rule, in fast time, ller first success was achieved in a .purse race at Louisville May 30. in which she defeated Light 0 M Life. Alpine and eight more at four and a half furlongs in 53. Her second victory was at the same track June S. This was in a purse race at five-eighths of a mile, which she won by three lengths in 1:01, wth Alamitos second, Oreen third and live unplaced, one of this division being the favorite Wheelwright. Then she was unsuccessful four times and did not "win again until July 1.! at Latonia. Here she took a pvrse at five and a half furlongs by ten lengths in 1:00, with Morode second, Aequin third and nine more badly strung out opponents unplaced. She was not started again until the Kentucky fall racing season arrived. At Lexington September 10 she finished third to Rose of .Teddah and Lady Lightning in the Senorita Stakes at three-quarters of a mile over a heavy track. September 2S at Churchill Dojvus she was third to Kaiser and Island Queen in the Golden Rod Stakes, three-quarters of a mile in 1:12. At the same track October 5 she ran second to Sonada in a purse race at live and a half furlongs in 1:05 and then bade adieu to defeat so far as 1!11 was concerned. The first of her lone series of successes was in a purse race two days later at tho same distance, which she won by five lengths in 1:00, with Rose of .Teddah second. Dilatory third and six others unplaced. October 12 she defeated Free Lance, Oakland. Sir Rlaise and Acguin at fivt-eighths of a mile over a heavy track in 1:02. This was her last race at Louisville. Her next start was at Latonia October 1C in a dash of five and a half furlongs and at the end of the race Azyiade was first by six lengths in 1:07, with Three Links second and Rose of .Teddah third. October 21 she won her first stake race. This was tho Roscdale Stakes at five and a half furlongs. It was Azyiade from start to finish. She won from Gates by four lengths in 1:00, Kaiser finishing third and four more aspirants limning unplaced. October 20 she picked up a purse from Light O M" Life. Mack R. Eubanks and five others, winning by three lengths and running the distance in 1:11!. November 4 she won her second stake race. This was the Fort Thomas Handicap at three-quarters of a mile. With 112 pounds up she set the pace throughout and won by a length from Froglegs in such fast time as 1:12. Kaiser was third and Presumption, Free Lance, Sonada, Wheelwright and Mack P.. Eubanks ran unplaced. There was complaint from Froglegs backers to the effect that he was unlucky in getting off badly, which was true, but the form of the race was confirmed in Azyiades next and last start. This race took place Novemler 11 and, with US pounds up to 119 on Froglegs, she again defeated him, lint this time by only a neck. The race was run in 1 :13 and Kaiser was again third, as lie had lxnrn in the Fort Thomas Handicap. This last race of Azyiades was in the name of H. C. Hallenback, he having purchased her for the reported prico of ,000 some days prior to the race. Along with Worth and the other good ones of the Hallenback stable she is now in well earned retirement for the winter. Her siie, Cactus IL. was brought from England by Ed Corrigan along witli Scintillant II., Marta Santa and others iu 1101 and was a winner in England, but of no great note. However, his breeding is unexceptionable and there is no reason for wonder in that he is tho sire of such a star as Azyiade. Her pedigree presents some unusual combinations and is here given, together with the following statement of her performances: , Starts. 1st. . 2nd. 3rd. Unp.
