GERMAN RACINGS EXPANSION. Racing seems to be thriving in Germany. When I was at Irankfort a few years ago I forget how much was deducted before winning money was juiid over from the pari-niutuels, but it was several times the amount that is taken from winnings in France, and it was said that the object of this was to discourage a taste for speculation, of which the kaiser disapproved. His majesty seems to have altered his sentiments, for now he is decisively encouraging the sport. Courses have been made in various places and others are being laid down, notablv. It appears, one at Dortmund, a town on the Rhine, which has a large population of pitmen and Iron workers. Ihe projectors are anxious to make a model course, and a deputation of members of the committee has been making. a tour of French race courses to find one on which their plans may be most advantage-ously based. It Is rather a snub for England that they do not come to us. It would be difficult to improve on Newbury; Goodwood, too, might well serve as an example, and if ground were obtainable a German Newmarket would surely fulfil all their requirements. The deputation, however, seems to liae nxeu upon .Maisons Latlitte. Tills is in all respects convenient, though I am not sure. If I wanted a model of a course, that I should not decide upon St. Cloud. It is said that the kaiser lias expressed his satisfaction with the new Grunewald meeting. It is satisfactory to find the snort going so strong in Germany, as for one tiling it will strengthen the breeding industry in England. London Referee.
