MAJOR-GENERAL WOOD SOUNDS ALARM. Sends Message to Congress Calling Loss of Thoroughbreds a National Calamity. Washington, D. C, December 21. In their zeal to suppress race-track gambling the Legislatures of the various states have seriously threatened the supply of proper mounts for the army, according to Major-General Wood, chief of staff, who has called the attention of Cougress to the subject. General Wood says that thoroughbred studs are being shipped out of the country in such numbers as to assume the magnitude of a national calamity. While other countries are spending immense sums of money in imported stock, many of Americas most renowned breeders have entirely sold out, shipped abroad or are gradually reducing their establishments.
