SILAS VEITCHS STRING OF JUMPERS. New York, December 21. Silas Veitch is wintering four horses in the barn formerly occupied hy Frederic Johnson at Belmont Park. The enclosure is No. 23 In the southeast part of the course, a location particularly fitted for this reticent and famous horseman. The chasers handled by Mr. Veitch during the season just closed were as successful as those ho trained and rode In days agoue. The success that gave him the most satisfaction last summer was the winning of the Chamblet Memorial Steeple chase at Brookliue in June, which was won by Harry K. Vinguts Waterspeed. The Chamblet Memorial Cup, one of the most valuable steeplechase trophies offered at any race meeting this year, must be won twice by the same owner to become his property. Waterspeed is now turned out at Mr. Vinguts establishment at Bay Shore, L. I. She will lie taken up In the spring and get a special preparation for the race. The cup valued at ,000 was donated by Miss Helen Hooper, daughter of Robert Chamblet Hooper, anil now Mrs. Lathrop Brown. Late In the 90s Mr. Veitch prepared and rode winner after winner for Mr. Hooper, who raced under the name of Mr. Chamblet. The principal members iof that notable collection of stake winners were: Land of Clover, Plato, Duke of Abcrcorn, White Garters, Moslem, Adjldaumo, Semper Ego, Semper Ira. Scotch Bush and Rovellc. As a rule Mr. Veitch goes Into winter quarters with few horses, and this year is no exception. A few seasons back his stable occupied one stall that being filled by old Grandpa. Before the following spring the Veitch string numbered eighteen. The following four horses comprise the lot now in his charge: Ariosto. ch. g, 3. by Orlando Aassari. Baron Dieskau, b. g, 4, by Rockton Euphrata. Bishop, ch. g, 4, by Handspring Musette. Country Guy, b. g, 4, by Singleton Shanshecn. Although he has not been seen under colors in a steeplechase field, Baron Dieskau, owned bj the Sage-Smith Stable, is probably the best horse in the barn. He went slightly wrong last May and was gelded. Prior to and since the mishap he has shown trials of a highly promising sort. Baron Dieskau was bred by General Stephen Sanford at the Hurrl-cana Stud. Amsterdam, N. Y. His sire, Rockton, could run fast and far, winning in his day many important features. Bishop won the Consolation Steeplechase at Pirn lico last spring, defeating among others Collgny, Rosshampton, Thistledalc and Enniskillen. He Is in excellent condition right now.
