RAIN IMPEDES KENTUCKY TRAINING Unfavorable Track Conditions Cause Cessation of Fast Work at Louisville Louisville Ky April 10 The Churchill Downs and Douglas Park tracks were slushy yesterday particularly the former course where it became necessary to ot up the dogs Many horses were exercised but few worked fast Tli Derby favor ¬ ite Hawthorn galloped by trainer W S Trevey a slow mile and a half and went through the mud as handily as he raced in such going last season Any kind of a track seems to suit the son of Hastings HastingsAmong Among those timed was Blue Jay which worked with Billy Holder threeiiuartcrs of a mile in 1114 They ran tlie lirst quarter lit and the half in 5 High Private went threeeighths In Little Jane a half in 54V All Red liveeighths in 108 High Class and Gold Blade a racer that has made quite an impression in France Mr Bradlev has priced the colt at 5000 and is willing to sell at that ligure though he is not anxious to dispose of the youngster which he and trainer CHIT Hammon regard as promising Bushy Head is nut in the Breeders Futurity at Lexington If he was Mr Bradley would not let him go for the 5tKW he asks for him The person who is after South ¬ ern Lad is a brown gelding by Coutestor Southern Girl the dam of Southern Gold and Rebel Queen Joseph QueenJoseph Schreiber has heard from California that his mare Dora I dam of the good sprinter Jim Basey iA expected to foal soon to Ossary and that his yearling lllly out of this mare by Ossary has developed into i likely youngster The mare will be mated this season to Duke of Ormonde a sou of the 150000 Epsom Derby winner Ormonde OrmondeLouis Louis Tauber lias shipped Spindle from Charleston to Lexington He will not be at the Downs with his old plater until the meeting begins there on May 10 This is the first time Tauber has been away from the local tracks during April in a number of years yearsGeorge George M llendrie an eminent Canadian the con ¬ trolling spirit in tlie Windsor Jockey Club and the owner of a big stable of racers passed through this city after having spent tlie winter at Naples Fla with John Hachineister manager of the Douglas Park and Latonia Jockey Clubs Walter 0 Par mer secretary of the Windsor Jockey Club and owner of Edenwold Farm in Tennessee the home of The Commoner was also a guest of Mr Hachmelstcr during Mr Ilendrles sojourn there Mr Ilcndrio stopiied here long enough to visit Douglas Park where his thirteen racers arc In training under the skilful direction of John Walters Two of the stars of the stable are Great Britain and Uitle Brigade Mr Heudrie found every horse in fine condition Groat Britains appearance especially appealed to him He said lie regarded him as one of the really great racers of Canada and this country Great Britain is an eligible for the 10000 Kentucky Handicap and the Latonia Derby He thinks the horse will lie a sturdy contender iu both events and he regrets that he is not ready for tlie Ken ¬ tucky Derby Mr Hendries racers will be cam ¬ paigned In Kentucky until the close of the Ken ¬ tucky season He will come here for the running of tlie Kentucky Derby and several prominent gentle ¬ men from Canada will accompany him himLyrnan Lyrnan H Davis secretary of the New Louisville Jockey Club lias received application blanks for trainers and jockeys licenses from the Kentucky State Racing Commission to be filled out by those who contemplate participating in tlie Kentucky As ¬ sociation meeting meetingJockeys Jockeys C Ganz and R Goose are brothers one using the German for Goose to avoid confusion Ganz who rides for E R Bradley and Goose who is employed by Adalr Baker are examples of what good training means for lioys They appear at the Downs bright and early every morning go through their work with a vim and when It conies to run ¬ ning a race tlie rivalry between them is as keen as though they were absolute strangers Out of the saddle they are inseparable They bear a striking resemblance to each other possess good disposi ¬ tions have no bad habits are methodical and do their best in all things They invariably leave the track iu the training season at noon never varying a minute in tlie time Last season at Douglas Park Goose rode four winners out of six mounts on Octo ¬ ber 1 On October IU at Latonia Ganz duplicated this performance Neither Is twentyone years of age They reside with their parents in Crescent Hill where they purchased a home out of their sav ¬ ings as jockeys jockeysRacing Racing Secretary Edward W Maginn will divide his time between Louisville and Latonia during the next three or four weeks getting out the stake en ¬ try Ixxiks for the coming meetings as well as the conditions of his overnight purses and handicaps to be run during the thirtysix days of racing at these two tracks There is not much to do in improve ¬ ments at present but during his stay here this spring Manager Hachmeister Will get everything in readi ¬ ness for work which It Is planned to do during the coming summer including tlie building of a club ¬ house on the south side of the grandstand where there are many shside trees to add to its beauty The management of the track mean to make the plant ultimately the equal of any race track grounds in the world iu itoiut of beauty and convenience
