BREEDING BUREAU DONATES TROPHY Montreal Qne April 10 As an encouragement to farmers and other owners of mares other than thoroughbreds to breed to stallions of the Canadian National Bureau of Breeding at whose request the management of the Montreal Horse Show added a class for the get of such a year ago tho bureau will donate a cup and prizes again this spring Tho adding of this class was with a view to improve the breeding of saddle horses and hunters throughout the Province of Quebec and Is sure to bring about the desired effect effectLast Last sinIng a likelylooking lot were shown and this season there should be even better quality as well as an increase in the number of exhibitors The bureau bus offered their cup and prizes in the class for the best yearling colt or lilly by a bureau stallion out of other than a thoroughbred mare The competition this year will bring out the second crop of the bureau stallions It promises to be a large one as many foals were registered last spring and summer summerIn In the past two or three years the farmers per ¬ haps more particularly than any of the other owners of such mares have accepted the opportuni ¬ ties offered to breed to bureau stallions throughout the province and are breeding to them more liberally each spring so that marked improvement should soon begin to show Itself ItselfThis This event was won a year ago by Athol a likely looking chestnut filly by Masterman and exhibited by Andrew Shearer Athol was a splendid specimen of the mating of a coldblooded mare witli a thor ¬ oughbred stallion She has every early sign so far as bone and substance are concerned of being the type most suitable for a hunter or saddle horse Colonel a colt by the same sire exhibited by Col J II Binland was second Keener competition is already assured by the nnml er of owners of such foals who have signified their intention of competing during the Montreal Horse Show from May 7 to 10 inclusive
