DERBY CANDIDATES AT LEXINGTON Lexington Ky April 10 A Kentucky Derby can ¬ didate which is beginning to attract considerable at tcntion is the magnificent looking McCorkle whose training is directed by that pastmaster of the art T C McDowell and which has worked as well as any threeyearold at the track excepting the sensa ¬ tional Foundation McCorkle is by the late James R Keenes famous race horse Disguise which invading England won the 0000 Jockey Club Stakes and was DerbyIt one of the top choices for the Epsom Derby It would be hard to find a better shaped horse than McCorkle and the fall lie was a yearling his work indicated that lie would be a star of the first magnitude Last spring as a twoyearold also lie showed so well in training as to be considered de ¬ cidedly the best of his age at the Lexington track and it was unanimously believed that he had a brilliant racing career before him He met with various mishaps at the beginning of the racing sea ¬ son and though lie was held back till late in the season in the hope of getting him right his races were disappointingHowever disappointing However those who have watched him closest do not believe that lie is only a morning glory and as he was a big and growing colt last season and was therefore given an easy campaign Iwth his trainer Major McDowell and his owner W L McCracken are confident that this year he will redeem the prom ise of his early training The colt certainly lias abundant speed and is a good weight carrier carrierOver Over at the Keene barn which shelters the Cam den horses no uneasiness is felt concerning the pros ¬ pects of the local Derby favorite Helios Never a tall or rangy horse Helios has followed out bis lines as a twoyearold and though comparatively low In stature he has thickened out and muscled np and is distinctively all horse horseHelios Helios makes no unnecessary show and is now as at this time last year before he defeated all Hie cracks of bis age doing all that is asked of him Neither is trainer Keeno worrying He knows the horse and lias unbounded faitii in him There prob ¬ ably will be no announcements this spring as there was none last year of sensational work by Helios for it is in his races alone that Helios has always shown his quality
