GREAT LOSS TO AUSTRIAN BREEDING Gouvcrnant which some time since met with nn accident splitting his pastern badly while being exercised is beyond the reach of veterinary skill His loss will fall heavily on breeders in Austria and Hungary lie was one of the best foals of Flying Fox in 1001 and made an excellent record when racing on the turf He was highly nervous iad objected strongly to the startiuggato as well as t thunder and lightning and imssibly this trait In hs character may have led his breeder to prefer Ills halfbrother Ajax for stud purposes as tho repre scutntive of the first years season at Tardy of th son of Orme and Vampire while thn second season was productive of the grand trio Adam Tardy and Val dOr As a fouryearold he won eight out of twelve races Bought by Mr A von Baltazzi for a syndicate of breeders and owners consisting of the Austrian Joekey Club Mr Dreher Mr Mantner von Markhof and Baron Springer great things were ex ¬ pected from him at the stud He calmed down and lost that nervousness shown in his racing days His loss is more appreciable since the victory of Luudon one of the handsomest colts in the paddock at Iffezlieim last August when he asserted his claim as candidate for favoritism in the classic events of this year by beating a good band in the Futurity Stakes ridden by F Bullock in the colors of the Royal Grndltz Stud He sired another good colt Jaromir for AustroHungary which was beaten by Landon after a determined finish in the Estcrhazy Memorial and a colt by Gouvernant out of Javorinn brother to Jaromir brought top price this year 1810 sovereigns at the Napagedler sales
