Meyer Wins Valuable Inaugural Handicap for Adair and Baker in Exceedingly Close Finish with Morristown. Cincinnati, O., October 20. More unfavorable weather could not be imagined than that which prevailed in this section today. Naturally, the attendance at the opening of Latonias eighteen-days fall meeting was much less than it would have been under normal conditions. Considering the adverse conditions, a surprisingly large gathering braved the inclement weather and visited the course. The betting was of large volume and well distributed on all the starters, accounting for liberal odds against the winners. The Inaugural Handicap, with an original entry of sixteen, was reduced by withdrawals on account of the going to six starters and resulted iu a thrilling finish between Samuel R. Meyer and Morristown. The former was awarded first money of ,480. Immediately following the display of the official placing the disgruntled backers of Morris-town began a demonstration which lasted for some time. Morristown had been the leader for the entire trip, with Samuel It. Meyer following closely. On the stretcli turn McCabe, the rider of Morristown. steered his mount wide and in the final furlong took matters rather coolly, centering his attention on the fruitless efforts of Kleburne. which was on the outside of him. Meanwhile, Samuel R. Meyer had saved a great deal of ground on the stretch turn and was responding iu game fashion to Gooses urging. McCabe awoke to the danger when about fiftv yards from the finish, but Morristown had begun to shorten his stride and could not be roused to extend himself fully in the short time before the finish and lost the race by a nose. . The winner finished close to the inner rail, while Morristown was running on the outer portion of tin-track. This, coupled with the deceptive angle at the finish, was responsible for the belief that Morristown had won. All the placing judges, including the stewards, who were directly on a line with the finish, were unanimously of the opinion that Samuel R. Mover had gotten up in time to beat Morristown. Kleburne was the favorite for the handicap, but the best he could do was to land third money. Leo-chares followed him closely. The latter was a contender for seven furlongs, but retired thereafter and probably had leen asked to do too much of late. Adair and Baker, owners of Samuel It. Meyer, iu addition to capturing the feature race, won the sec-end face with Effendi, which outstayed Orperth in a hard drive. The going was held to be exactly to James Dock-orys liking in the opening dash, but Vreeland took his measure handily, after having shown the favorite the way for the entire trip. Cash on Delivery, an overwhelming choice, won the third race com-mandingly. with Maria C. in second place and Florence Roberts third. The six-furlongs sprint that engaged some of the better class of two-year-olds, brought with it another thrilling finish. Brigs Brother winning by a nose from Anytime, with the latter a similar distance in advance of AVaterbass. Hodge, the favorite, showed a poor performance and finished far back. Belloc also ran disappointingly. Cream and Manager Mack, the betting choices, had the closing dash between them for most of the way and landed at the finish in the order named, with L. II. Adair third. General Manager John Hachnieister was greatly encouraged by the unexpectedly large attendance and lively speculation. Milton Young, chairman of the Kentucky State Racing Commission, who will serve as steward o represent the racing commission at this meeting, has been ailing with rheumatism and had to resort today to the use of crutches. Congressman Arthur B. Rouse made the trip from Washington, D. C, to be on hand for the opening. The two-horse combination, comprising Areeland and Effendi, yielded its backers 2.00; Cash on Delivery, Brigs Brother and Cream, comprising the .three-horse combination, paid .55. Dr. J. S. Tyree, whose horses are being handled here by J. J. McCafferty, came from his home in AAashington, D. C, for the opening and to inspect his racers. Jockey Snyder, who will ride for the Tvree stable, has recovered fully from the injuries attending a fall in Canada and probably will be .seen in the saddle tomorrow. T. Hart Talbot, member of the Kentucky State Racing Commission, was among the spectators and will remain here for some time. Kinzea Stone, well-known breeder, was among the visitors. He will remain until after the sale of thoroughbred yearlings in the Latouia paddocks next week. AA. Northey. who is familiarizing himself with the inside workings of the niutuel system of betting, in anticipation of the system being installed at the Blue Bonnets track in Montreal, held a long conference today with John Hachnieister and secured plans and specifications of the Douglas Park pari-niutuel arrangement. The Douglas Park track is considered to be the best equipped of any of the Kentucky tracks in the matter of betting arrange-1 mcnts and nearly all the Canadian tracks contemplating the installation of the mutuel system of betting intend to pattern as closely as possible after the Douglas Park plans and methods. Fred Auerbach, who will share with Santo Sotille the management of the Charleston track during the coming winter, will arrive here tomorrow to confer with Frank J. Brueii over minor details. The entry list to the twenty-three stakes offered by the track during its seventv-eight days of racing is growing steadily and includes some of the best racers now in training.
