DISAGREED WITH JUDGES 5 SPECTATORS AT PALMETTO PARK THOlIGHT ARMOR HAD BEATEN MARY ANN K. " Finish of Race Was So Closo That Only Officiais 1 Were in Position to Decide Other Closo Finishes, Too. Charleston, S. C. March 23. Tlie final week of the long season of racing at Palmetto Park began this afternoon, favored by summerlike weather and a large attendance. Track conditions were bad and : resulted in numerous withdrawals from mos. of the races. Some of the finishes were of the closest and the finishing post angle was responsible for a disagreement in regard to the correct placing in the iiftli race. The judges, who alone are ou a direct line, gave the decision to Mary Ann K.. but tlie backers of Armor thought the Pons horse had lasted to win by a nose. The three-quarters of a mile handicap resulted in the lirst five finishing almost in cavalry alignment. Minda won by a nose over Pardner and the same margin separated the latter from Progressive, with the favorite, Sherwood, a similar distance away. Sherwood was unquestionably best, but jockey Teahan handled him weakly in addition to taking him extremely wide in tlie stretch. Another close finish deveIoed in the closing dash, when Font jusl lasted to beat Serviccnce. Font would have won easily but for having stumbled several times in the stretcM. After the finish, William Walker, owner of Serviccnce, advanced Font from an entered price of 00 to .00 and failed to get him. Owen Pons, owner of Font, retaliated by claiming Serviccnce for 25. Frank E. Brown has changed his plans and will ship his entire racing stable to Norfolk on AVednes-dav next. Others who will ship at the same time are James Arthur, M. C. Kelly. W. Walker, W. E. i Phillips. C. A. Phillips, J. P. Byrne and F. J. Cole-i man. The consignment will consist of six cars of i racers. i There were a number of departures yesterday, . including W. R. Engstrom. who left for a rest at i Hot Springs, Ark. He probably will not resume i booking operations until the Montreal spring tueet-. iug begins. George North took his stand in tlie ring and will likely operate during the remainder 1 of the season here.
