CHARLESTON SEASON ENDS PALMETTO PARK MEETING COMES TO CLOSE UNDER AUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES. Meeting Has Been Successful and Is Expected to Lead to Better One in the Future Big Crowd Out for Farewell Day. . Charleston, S. C., March 2S. Racing at Palmetto Park for this season terminated this afternoon iu the presence of one of the largest gatherings of enthusiasts that ever patronized the sport here. The exodus oT turfmen and race followers began tonight, most of them going to New York for a short stay before resuming operations at Norfolk. Tho:Je going direct to Norfolk will leave by special train tomorrow. The Kentucky delegation will leave by speeial train next Monday. The otlicials will all have left here by Tuesday. With the decision of todays program, there lias been one hundred days of racing out of 102 scheduled days. Two of the days were lost on account of suspensions due lo inclement weather. The association met with financial success, but not to a great extent. Most of the profits will lie expended on the plant In improvements and a general overhauling. The present meeting firmly established its promoters contention that they could race here without interference and prospects appear even better for the future, as the. sport gained many new local friends this year. There were no outward incidents iu connection with the sport this afternoon and the big crowd found plenty of entertainment, as most of the liu-ishes were spirited. The handicap which featured the card was won by the vastly improved Charlier, which during this meeting lias developed into u much better racer than ever before in his career. He scored over some of the best sprinters that could be mustered here, with Caugh Hill second and Royal Meteor third. The stewards are still probing into the alleged ringing case of yesterday when Golliwogg is said to have been substituted for Country Boy. The association took possession of the horse yesterday, but they had to give him up today on a write of replevin served by the sheriff on behalf of his sup-nosed owner, J. ONeill. Those who observed the horse in the paddock yesterday and closely inspected his markings are firmly of the opinion that it is Golliwogg. Advices from the Norfolk track received today were to the effect that neither Country Boy nor Golliwogg could be located there. It is supposed that the attempt to put over a ringer originated in the fertile brain of Den Chisholm, of Ilirain Johnson, the Fiddler, Freckniau, Natalie II., Intiue, Judge Smith and Buckwiu fame. He is known to have been here. M. J. Daly, who formerly had Golliwogg in charge, is en route from Norfolk to make iiidentilication of the horse, if possible. That the horse reported in the paddock yesterday was not Country Boy is established to the satisfaction of the otlicials. It is likely that the stewards will make a ruling tomorrow. The horses Addie M. and Charlestouian, trained by !. W. Langdon for Dr. .1. W. Messervy, the local sHrtsman. were shipped by steamer yesterd-iy to Gravcsend, where they will be trained until ready-to li shipped to Louisville to engage iu the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Jockey Peak, after winning with Jim Savage, was taken violently ill as a result of excessive reducing this morning. He recovered later.
