WHEN THE ONTAItIO JOCKEY CLUB WAS BOEN A Toronto paper, in noting the death of Hie late Charles T. Mead, says be was the last of those who attended the memorable meeting at the Queens Hotel, Toronto, when the Ontario Jockey Club bad its birth, it is my province. 1 am happy to say, to be able to move an amendment. Arthur Godson, contractor. Toronto, was present and is still in the tlesh, so. too. is Yours Truly. I can well recall the occasion. Sir Casimir Gzowski was in the chair. In front of him sat Colonel Cumberland, T. C. Patterson. William Hendrie, Sr., William Chrstie, J. II. Mead. George W. Torrance. Dr. Andrew Smith, T. W. Jones, who acted as seeietarv: K. King-Podds. Charles Brown. Robert Bond, Joseph Duggan, Charles T. Mead, all now dead, and Arthur Godson. The occasion is impressed upon mv memory by the fact that after some discussion Sir Casimir. then plain Casimir Stanislaus Gzowski, asked for the stock liook and, having signed his name for O0, said: There, I expect that is all vou want of me," and bowed himself out. Charlie Mead, for long president of the Caer Howell Curling Club, the oldest club in Toronto, was one of the finest sjHjrtsmen Canada has ever known and was loved and respected by every one with whom he came in contact. His personality was indeed most attract Ive and he was the soul of honor, with a keen hatred of fustian and hypocrisy. Hie was a great dog fancier, a good lawn bowler and curler, and at one time partner with his brother in the Abingdon Stable, to which Disturbance, Ianuy Wiser, last Ontario Kings Plate winner away from Toronto, Ixrd Dufferiu, Long Taw and other horses at the timo well known, lxdonged. He was also an excellent rider across country and I had the honor of acting with him wheu he was clerk of the scales at the first meeting the Ontario Jockey Club ever gave at Woodbine.
