ENGLANDS PREMIER RIDER THIS YEAR. When Kleinfontein carried off the October Handicap at Newmarket September 30,. his rider, Stephen Donoghue, had ridden his hundredth winner of the year. As Donoghue has never previously reached three figures, even in a complete season, the date will count as a red-letter day m the career or our leading jockey, who is tolerably certain to hgme at the head of the list when the final reckoning has t0Imioghue" is a native of Ireland, and it was in the Emerald Isle that his early riding took place. He first appeared in the English list of riders i in ltiOi. when his total wins numbered eight, lhe following season ills wins aggregated 2i. In 1.J11 the figure rose to 40; in It 12 it dropped to 41, while last vear he finished fifth in the table to Malier, F. Wootton, Whaley, and Wbeatley, with 78 to Iiis name. . . Among his more im.iortant winners may be Included Bachelors Double, in the Jubilee Stakes; Christmas Daisv, in the Cambridgeshire; Ultimus, in the Manchester November Handicap; and China Cock, in the Liverpool Summer Cup; while he was ou the back of Lord Aunaudale when Mr. Raphael s colt ran a dead-heat with Golden Sun m the Stewards Cup, at Goodwood last July. Donoghue has yet to achieve his first success in a classic race, though but for the enforced wit l-drawal of The Tetrarch from this years big events it is highly probable that he would by now have enrolled his name ou the classic scroll. It will be recalled that Donoghue was associated with the numerous triumphs of Captain McCaltnonts phenomenon last season, and in other circumstances he would have ridden him in his engagements this vear. Donoghue, however, had the satisfaction f riding Laud of Song to victory in the Irish Derby last June. One of the defeated on that occasion was Righ-Mor, which is now located at Newmarket, and which somewhat curiously, finished second to Kleinfontein. Sir V. Nelson has first claim on the services of Donoghue, while Pcrsscs stable has second call. London Sporting Life.
