MOVE TO RESTORE BOOKMAKING. From South Australia conies word that an effort is to be made during the present Parliamentary session to secure the legalization of bookmaking on race courses in that state. Many people believe that bookmakers. In conjunction with the totalizator, make things better for backers than the restriction of speculation to the totalizator. Big punters certainly reckon It Is so, hut whether those people who are moving in the matter have sufficient interest to bring abount an alteration of the betting system at present prevailing in South Australia, is questionable. It is stated that a deal of clandestine lwokiuaking goes on at South Australian race courses, but though the most is bound to be made of that, it might be fairly safe to bet that It will not lead to booKliiakers being allowed to enter Into open competition with the totalizator. An Adelaide exchange says that the measure will probably be submitted first to the legislative council. Sydney Referee.
