NOTES OF THE TURF. Edward Corrlgan was among the throng at Latonia yesterday. P. Walters has purchased from J. F. Gaffney the two-year-old brown filly, Met Mexican. Amongst the horses presented to the New Zealand expeditionary forces were several well-known performers on the turf. Hoiie for the recovery of F. B. Respess has been abandoned and his brothers. J. B. and Charles, have gone to his bedside at the Deaconess Hospital. Buffalo. He has been an inmate of the hospital since July 7. Sixteen thoroughbreds that have been racing In the colors of Harry Payne Whitney in England arrived on the Atlantic transport steamer Minne-waska yesterday at New York and were shipped to the Whitney stock farm; at Brookdale, N. J. Trainer John Walters denies that G. M. Ilendries long distance champion. Great Britain, is ailing, but he has temporarily let up on him because of the unfavorable track conditions that have been prevailing of late in Kentucky. There is a pos; sibilitv that ho may be seen iu action at Latonia if track conditions become favorable. Mr. Hendrie is expected to visit Latonia during the meeting now on. Bookmakers strikes are rarely successful where the totalisator is also available as a medium of speculation. At the recent annual Townsville meeting the club raised the biiokmakers fee from 0 to S75, In consequence of which the latter went on strike. This confined betting to the totalisator. and the club did so well that it was decided by its committee that ;it its next race meeting all betting should again be. dono. through, ithe machine.
