TIMELY GOSSIP FROM KENTUCKY. Cincinnati, O.. October 19. T. II. Talbot, steward of the Kentucky State Racing Commission at Latonia, is much impressed with the idea of selling race handicaps as occasional feature events. The first of these programmed at the recent meeting at Churchill Downs, resulted in a most interesting contest, with every one of the eight entries accepting the weights and starting in the race. The telling price upon that occdsiou was ,000. The selling Handicap is merely a race in which the owner enters his horse at the. gelling price named aud permits the otlicial bandlcapper. to adjust the weights. Tue noted three-year-old gelding. Little Neptow, has been severely blistered and thrown out of training until ue,xt year. .Hewiirbeintered,aJ. Churchill Downs aiid allowed to run out .daily la the paddock at that track. This sou of Uncle looks exceedingly well aud it is believed that the present operation .will decrease to a great extent tlte swelling In his injured leg. Both his owner aiU trainer think now tint with proper care he will come back to the races as a four-year-old. a useful horse. Trainer Hart Newman- shipped Pan Zareta and the rest of his stable to Texas from Churchill Downs and they will be joined there by enoughs young horses at the Newman ranch to make up a carload for hipnient to Juarez. Mr. Newman was much put out over the accident to Don Cortez in a race Friday, when that two-year-old was hopelessly cut down, having both tendous severed. He had "hoped to see this son of St. Savin develop into a grand three-year-old next seaton and had made up his mind not to race him any more this year, lie went to the track Saturday morning at the Downs intending to scratch Don Cortez, but having engaged L. Murphy to ride him he consented to start him so that jockey would not lose a inouiit. Of course he thought the colt had a winning chance at that. Don Cortez will be retired at the Newman ranch and it is the intention to use him as a stock horse. He is one of three foals by St. Savin that the Newmans, secured by sending several mares to Kentucky for mating with that horse. The other two of St. Savins get are promising aud will be raced the coming winter. One out of Sainvoke. by Sain, was mated with five mares in Texas last spring. Don Cortez is out of a favorite mare of the Newmans, his dam being a sister to Don Domo, known as the "gray ghost." Mose Goldblatt has bought from Ainos Turney the erratic Dr. Tate. He purchased him to add to his string, which after the Latonia meeting he will take to Juarez, and If : lie succeeds in over-comii the geldings bad disposition .he probably will have a useful performer. Dr. Tate is credited with having worked over the Douglas Park track a sensational half mile. Goldblatt expects to get together a full carload of horses to take to Juarez. He now has in his string Dr. Tate, Othello. J. Nolan, Charmeuse, Senic and four yearlings. Some of the latter are promising. Charles Bills has had poor luck with his racing ventures lately. In his last start his speedy geldiug Chilton King struck his leg: and Bills fears be is filially a hopeless cripple. Up to this mishan Chilton King had been doing well in training aud Bills had hoiKjd to win several races with him. Peter Wimmer, who went to England not long since in the interest of J. L. Widener, of Philadelphia, is now in Kentucky and has severed his connections with that siwrtsinau. After coming back to this country, Wimmer had charge of a number of the Widener horses at Sheepshead Bay. but as that gentleman desires to develop them all into junipers, the trainer of Kinley Mack, Ben Holiday and many other noted horses left his. employ. He has no engagement at present in view, and if he does not tie up with some big stable he probably will train a public stable next year.
