1 1 1 ; : : j KENTUCKY SEASON MOST SUCCESSFUL ON RECORD Racing at Louisville, Latonia and Lexington Attended by Unexampled Prosperity This Year Huge Crowds Enjoy Sport of Exceptional Brilliancy , : it is no exaggeration to say that the racing season recently concluded In Kentucky was. on the who!e. the most successful in the history of the sport in the old commonwealth that has for so long figured as the home of the thoroughbred In America. The meetings at Louisville, Latonia and Lexington, conducted under license from the Kentucky State Racing Commission, were marked by sport nneqnaled for brilliancy elsewhere in the country and all were wonderfully well patronized. In conformity with the policy which has been followed out during the past few years, there was a further, though slight, reduction in the length of i the meetings at Churchill Dgwns and Douglas Park, Louisville. One result of this shortening of the season is that the total distribution of money in stakes and purses falls a trifle behind tlie figures for the preceding year, when a new record was made in this respect. The dally average distribution, on the other ; hand, shows a slight gain over 1913. Nowhere in North America Is racing in a healthier condition than in Kentucky. The tables published iu connection with this review of the racing season recently closed show that the distribution of prize money has doubled sine 1SI00. the lirst year for which figures are given. Horsemen and racing associations hav" shared equally iu the propsperity that has attended the siwrt. The public has been treated to. a better brand of racing year by year, thanks to the safeguards with which the Kentucky State Racing Commission has surrounded the sport. Its patrons nowadays having small cause for complaint. Advocates of the pari-mutuel form of betting do not liesitate to bestow upon the workings of that system of speculation much oF the credit for the prosyerous and generally healthy condition of the turf in Kentucky. Although it was deemed advisable to abandon the four-mile Kentucky Endurance Stakes this year because of the disinclination of trainers of tlie best horses to patronize the stake sufficiently to warrant its continuance, long distance racing continued to be an attractive feature of the fall meetings at Douglas Park, Churchill Downs and Latonia. It Is the expressed intention of the managements of the three tracks named to continue the Louisville Cup, the St. Leger Handicap and the Latonia Cup, the distances of which range from two miles to two miles and a quarter. Kentucky patrons of racing have shown a fondness for races of this sort and they will occupy the place of honor on fall programs so long as the public taste runs in that direction. As in previous years, the Latonia Jockey Club led the other associations in respect to amount of money distributed, as a natural result of the greater length of racing time at that course as compared with the others. The following tabulation sets forth in a general way the results of the year on the various Kentucky courses: . y. v ti si a ss s- c z and S 0? C51 r lii -pet zs SSfp of.
