James Jacobs, chief or police on Kentucky race tracks, was married at Cincinnati Tuesday to Miss Lena Schwab, of Louisville, and forthwith departed witli Ills bride for Juarez, where he will have charge f the track policing arrangements. J. Howard Lewis has retired the J. E. Widener stable of jumicrs for the season. The horses have been thipped from Laurel to the Widener farm in Pennsylvania. Lewis will pick up several throe-year-ohls tills rail, with the Idea of developing "th-m into chasers. New York National Guard oiiifials are trying to make arrangements for the state to buy part of the Kenilworth race track at lSuffalo. for use as a rilie range. The state has a lease for the use of part of tlie grounds for target practice and it has some time to run. but otlicers believe the property should be bought and turned Into a permanent range. The property is owned by August Belmont. Race meetings have been held In Canterbury. New Zealand, since tlie year 1S01. and by the Cantorbury .Tockey Club for nearly sixty years without a break, and with the exception of a few of the early meet-inzs, en tlie race coarse reserve set apart by the government of the day at Kiccartoti. stcepleehasing events were run there and iu the vieinitv in the , sixties, but it was not until 1875 that "the lirst 4 Grand National .Steeplechase was decided there. This was when .Mr. lirittans Royalty won. Some people have retentive memories for past racing events, and it may seem wonderful how they can revert to the deeds or derring-do of some of the old-time riders and horses when the country at Iticcarlon was more natural and certainly more formidable than at the nrescnt time. Though admittedly still the bggcst In the Dominion, it has to be allowed that the nature of the going, the approaches to the fences, ami the landing arc all that can be desired. Sydney Referee.
