DEATH OF A SUCCESSFUL BREEDER. Frauds Alexander, who had been in ill health for a long time, died at his residence, Everlelgii Ilouse. Marlborough, England, shortly after noon November 5. The late Mr. Francis Alexander was an all-round sportsman, as, besides being a patron of tlie turf, lie was a splendid game shot, an enthusiastic -bugler, aud one of the best-known patrons of greyhound coursing. These tastes were undoubtedly inherited from his father, the late Mr. Caledou Alexander, the hero of a match against Sir John Astley. which is frequently recalled by old-time sportsmen. The former rode Briglia. while Sir John steered Drumhead, and though the latter won, .Mr. Alexander made matter even by subsequent defeating his . rival In a pigeon-shooting contest. Mr. Francis Alexauder raced on tlie best lines. His stud was a small one, but he generally had two or three useful horses in training. John Porter had charge of .them at first, but of late years II. Braimi; trained for him at Burbidge. His first good winner was Son of a Gun, which carried the popular dark blue, white sleeves, and black cap to victory in both the Liverpool Summer and Autumn Cups of 1S94. Throwaway, which won tlie Liverpool Autumn Cup for Mr. Alexander in 1902, and tlie Ascot Gold Cup two years later, was one of his own breeding, as also was Andovor, which won th; Royal Hunt Cup in 1000. Both were sons of Right-away, a sire which was in great favor with Mr. Alexauder. When Throwaway won at Liverpool w was trained by Porter, at Kingsclere, but he was prepared for his Ascot Gold yup race by Braime. Throwaways Ascot victory created quite a sensation, as he was opposed by the famous marc Sceptre. Zinfandel. and the French horse Maximum .II, and was naturally the outsider of the party. Throwaway was ridden by W. Lane. Another useful horse owned by Mr. Alexander wiis Bitters, a daughter of St. .Serf and Mara, which finished second to Pretty Polly in the Oaks of 1904. and subsequently wou the Yorkshire Oaks. The deceased gentleman sent three horses to Ascot in 1900, and won with the whole of them. Chuck away taking the Visitors Handicap, Andover the Rous Memorial, and Bitters the High-Weight Stakes a fine tribute indeed to tlie training methods of Braime. Air. Alexander was elected a member of the Jockey Club in 1904.
