i - ■ . . , LORD DERBYS STAR THREE-YEAR-OLDS. • Of Phalaris, I have frequently written good I Words, and am in the position now to confirm all L that has been said in his prai.-e. This son of Polymelus is a horse of great stature, standing over sixteen hams and two inches, and. strange to , ay. was a May foal, and small at that, lie grew so fast throughout last year that it is surprising he showed the smart form he did. but he was wisely handled with leniency, and. miles- I am I mistaken, will well reward Die patient policy. His I progress after being turned out for a while l.a-lieen most satisfactory in every way. and he has , thickened to a remarkable extent, besides letting down finely, thus losing the leggy appearance which I marked him as a two year old. In quality he can , challenge o mparison with any of ins contemporaries, and bearing in mind Irs brilliant speed and | resolution when an overgrown baby. I fully expect that lie will develop stamina with nge and show htaaself quite at the top of the throe-year old class. I am content for the present to record the opinion that it will take a real top-sawyer to beat him for the Two Thousand Guineas, though fully alive to i the fact that that race will take a lot of winning this year. It is pleasant to be able to report similar improvement as regards Canyon, and that she has grown considerably, for in all other respects she wa- in appearance as nearly perfection as possible. She shows superb quality, has great length and Immense power, being exceptionally good to follow, and now stands fifteen hands and two and one-half inches on good short legs. She comes of staying blood, being by Chaucer — Glasalt. dam of Glads, Queens Journal. Glacier and King William. and that she inherits the Isinglass stamina may be assumed from her bold fight out of the Abingdon Dip for the Dew hurst Plate. She is perhaps not quite as quick on her legs as Fitinella. but I shall be surprised if she does not give Mr. IIul-tonS flyer a busy time at the Rowley Mile finish tor the One Thousand Guineas. In fact. Lard Derby owns two highly-promising three year-olds, and in less degree can b ok for good resiills from Russet and Seneniatmn. of these Die sister to Young Pegasus is a big. upstanding filly that is furnishing finely, and although a maiden, showed fine speed on several occasion- last year, notably •lien on her debut she ran Jack Annanilal to a short head for the Sandown Produce Stakes, and again when third close ap for the Hopeful Stakes. Serenissima is a half-sister to Let Flv. by Minora, a BtOng boned mare of the wear ami-tear soil. that shewed a bit of form last year, and looks like being at her best over long courses. Va Via is a daughter of Cicero and Pilgrims Way. of the long, low type, and has grown into an exceptionally good-lookfng mare. She ran four times anauccess fully last year, but was handicapped with knee trouble, and could never do herself justice on the hard ground. She is aow doing well, and will assuredly belie her k oks if she fail to do better during this season. — "Vigilant" in London Sportsman.
