i ■ I FEATS OF SAM L0ATES IN THE SADDLE. Over a dozen years have elapsed since Sam L I tea, not the least celebrated of a famous brotherhood, was last seen in the saddle. Sam. who recently celebrated his 52 birthday anniversary, like many other eminent riders, turned his attention to training when his riding days had terminated, but it is as a horseman that he will chiefly 1h remembered. Sam had the advantage of serving his apprenticeship with that past master in his profession. Tom Cannon. He trained his first Imnortant success in the autumn of 1882, when, on the back of Mr. Robert Pecks Ilackne-s. he easily heal the favor ite, Shrewsbury, for the Cambridgeshire. This raci- was run a day later tbaa was intended, a severe storm on the Tuesday necessitating the postponement of three events. Loates won many otter big handicaps in the course of hi- career including.- the City and Suburban on Merry Duchess, the Chester Cup on Merry Prince and Count Sch berg, the Manchester Cup on El rence, the Royal Hunt Cup on The Solicitor, and the Manchester November Handicap on Partington. Loates lias likewi-. 1 . f t ids impression upon the classic record-, lie wa- concerned in the finish of the sensational Derby of issi. •,„ which he rode Sir J. Wlllougubys Harvester, which ran a dead heal with Mr. -Jack" Hammonds St. Gatiea, rid den by Charles W ad, the stakes being divided. Eleven years later Loates won outright the great Bosom rue Lord Boseberys Sir Visto, whose victory immediately followed that of Ladas in the primrose and the rose-hooped jacket of the e Premier. Loates also rode Sir Visto to victory in the St. Leger. In the year 1898 Loates distinguished himself bv riding the winners of both the Two Thousand and One Thousand. In the former i„. had tin- handling of Mr. Wallace lohnstouei Disraeli, which beat tbe outsider Wantage by a length and a half, with the subsequent Derby winner. Jedduh. out of the lead ill. trio. In the One Thousand he had the riding of Sir J. Blundell .Maples Nun Nicer, which was attended past the post by Ails and Graces. In the Oak- a month later the latter decidedly turned the tables. Sam also won the Oaks of "ls«ir, ,,„ i_a Sage sac, owned bv Sir James Miller, and the One Thousand of 1900 on Mr. L. Braseeyi Wialfreda. Sam was also the hero of a famous match at Gatwick, in which two notoriously bad horses, Rowanberry and Shepperton. were concerned. Loates rode one. while Sloan was on the other! and the former demonstrated that the American could give him no start in the matter of match riding by recording a victory. Late in his career Loates was the victim of a nasty smash at Northampton. The aci ident was the result of the fall of Nateby in the Ceaaptou Welter Handicap, and thongh he rode aftrew.-.rds. he was never quite the same. — London flnortlni Life.
