CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. Quite probably Hoscoe Gooses feat of riding seventeen winners in a week is a record. An epidemic of coughing has seized uiwhi the horses at Helmont Park. This accounts for the small fields. H. C. Hallcnbock was so pleased with the riding of Schuttinger. who steered The Finn to victory in the Metropolitan that immediately after the race he signed a contract with this rider for the balance of the season. It is reported that the fine three -year -old CriuilHT, which fell to Hal Parrs bid of 818,588 at the Huryca sale last Saturday, was really Ix.uglit for Kdward I. Mclean of Washington. Mr. McLean has only raced juiiiikts heretofore. The Duke of Portland was not so long ago the chief winning owner in Britain, but his recent experience on the turf has lx-en of a different order. The race he won with Aducclo at Newmarket c.irly this month was the first success for his colors in two years. After an interregnum of nearly two years, the KimlK-rley, South Africa, meeting was resumed at the Diamond Fields this month. The course has only r-ecntly been taktn back from the Inion Defense Department, ill whose hands it has been since the beginning of tiie war. George Wt Wiugficld has had the misfortune to lose one of his prominent sires at his Nevada Stock Farm near Hcno. Starliottlc died recently. He has sired a number of good-looking youngsters and gave promise of lx-gotting sterling horses. Star-bottle was by Hastings — Suufish and was nine years old. A consignment of thoroughbreds, the mnki up of whirh is more or less of a mystery, is due at New-York uext Wednesday or Thursday to be sold by the Powers -Hunter company. All that Mr. W. L. Powers knows is that there are nine three-year-olds of good breeding, several of which won races as two -year-ohs in England. The C. K. i. Hillings-Frederick Johnson English two-year-olds purchased last autumn by Charles Patterson were shown in the paddock at Hebnont Park between races and excited much favorable comment. When these and the high-priced two-year-olds in the Macomber string enter racing there will lie semi" excitement. In the Juvenile Stakes Hourless showed what may be expected from the best of the many two-year-olds imported from abroad.
