EXCELLENT RACING WITH SMALL FIELDS. Many Ailing Horses at Belmont Park Affects the Entries Materially — Roamer Coming West. New York, May 31. — Several of todays fields at Belmont lark were small, but the entire card furnished excellent racing. Ideal weather prevailed, which was responsible fur a goodly turnout of racing enthusiasts. The nineteenth running of the Bouquet Stakes served as the feature and was contested by only two starters. The Harden City Selling Handicap, at six and a half furlongs, was also on the card. A majority of the two-year-olds in the larger stables are afflicted with an epidemic of coughing. This also applies to quite a few of the older divisions and is the chief reason for the small number of entries for the daily program. Iio.imc r was shipped to Leuiiville this morning by trainer A. J. Goldshorough. Jockey Hutwell, who will have the mount on the Miller gelding in the Kcntiuky Handicap, will depart tonight. Kimball Patterson sent Juliet along in the same care. Sneciilation ou the lawn continues heavy and shows a marked increase over this time last year. The success of a large majority of the favorites has served to give the talent the better of it so far. Sam McMcokin found his work cut out for him to defeat Ida Claire in the second race. The latter led from the start and the P.elmont horse only got up in the final stride. Monocacy. the second choice, ran out when entering the stretch. The Itoitquot Stakes, worth 1916.sh75 net, was marred by the withdrawal of Breeze, leaving only two starters. Triple Crown and Old Drury. The former won in a common canter, lullux defeated fair opposition in the third race, with the well-backed Royal Martyr in second place. True as Steel, one of the choices, tired badly in the final stages. George Smith will lie shipped to Louisville tomorrow to start in the Kentucky Handicap on Saturday. Jockey L. Mink will go as his rider. Following the running of the second race, James Fitzsimmons. trainer of Armament, and S. C. llilelreth. trainer of Sam McMeekin, lioth put in claims for Ida Claire and after drawing lots. Hil-dreth got the filly. Henry J. Morris, the owner of Armament, then protesled the claim on the ground that it is a violation of the rules of racing which provides that the owner of a winner has last claim on a beaten horse in a selling race. After the mixup in claiming Ida Claire, Emil Hera, the owner of the mare, lodged a protest against the claim being allowed as the disposition of the mare jfriifl Mill "ilcxided until after the time limit had expired. This followed the runup of Sam McMeekin from |4M to ,205. by J. Kelly, who was represented in the race by Daiugcrfield. It develops that, following the victory of Presumption yesterday in the second race, he was advanced from MM to ,000 by Emil Hcrz. but was retained by bis stable. J. W.
