MAKING PROGRESS AT HAWTHORNE TRACK. A visit of inspection to Hawthorne yesterday revealed some activity in the way of putting the track and its equipment into condition for racing. A corps of fourteen carpenters were found at work in fitting and repairing thirteen of the big stables and it was said they would be ready to receive horses within three weeks. The grandstand was given a new roof last year and. except in some minor particulars, is in good condition. The restaurant and bar are freshly painted and a floor for dancing is a new feature. The grandstand floor is lx-ing repaired and. in spots, renewed, especially in front. The fences, which inclose the track, are all up and also both rails around the track. Three thousand chairs have been ordered for the grandstand and will be put in place within a few weeks. The i.ld -time betting ring building is in good condition, but the Imokmakers stands, which were stored in it, have lieen removed. This building and the paddock, which is also in excellent preservation, will be painted and made presentable. The street railway tracks, which formerly conveyed many to the track, were torn up some years ago, but are now being relaid. The Illinois Central and Purliugton tracks to the sheds behind the grandstand are still in good order, but are to be generally overhauled. Altogether it seems that the transportation facilities will be up to the standard of the days when thousands were carried to and from the track in comfort.
