NO FEATURE AT LATONIA PLEASANT WEATHER GIVES PROMISE OF AN IMPROVED TRACK AND BETTER RACING Leo Skolny Beaten in the Clifton Handicap by John Jr. — Sister Susie an Easy Winner — Buckner in Luck. Cincinnati. O.. June 22. — R. J. Mackenzies Leo Skolny again proved a huge disappointment by his failure to win the Clifton Handicap, whieh was the feature of the ordinary card of seven raees staged jit Latonia today. He was an outstanding favorite and succuinlied to .lohn Jr. The latter raced in liis best, form and stood a terrific drive through the final eighth. Ideal weather, the first of the week, was in -■U omental in bringing out the best mid-week attendance of the meeting. The track had dried considerably over night and had a dry surface, but was still soggy in spots and favored the mud runners. The racing was ordinary on the whole, many of the winners scoring in easy fashion, with their victories well foreshadowed after rounding into the stretch. This applied to Sister Susie and Nobleman, which won as their riders pleased. Considering the poor grade of starters and the difficult track, speculation was exceptionally brisk. The public started off well when T. C. McDowells Sister Susie cantered home in advance of the ordinary opposition she met. Nettie Walcutt was the one most fancied for the second race and she might have won but for meeting with considerable interference from the winner, Buckncr. The latter was lucky to win. as, all conditions equal, lie should have been third. Trusty, which landed third, would have been dangerous with a more competent rider. Noblemans victory was made the easier when Cash on Delivery was interfered with soon after the start and forced to trail until the stretch was reached. Todays visitors included W. E. Applegate. who came from New York. Ho rei orts racing on the Metropolitan tracks in a flourishing condition and the attendance in excess of that of recent years. There is considerable interest in New York regarding the proposed Chicago racing, according to Mr. Applegate, and many will come to Hawthorne from the east. R. J. Mackenzies horses will be shipped to Fort Erie for the racing there. The English -bred Faux-Col is intended as a starter in the Hamilton and Canadian Derby*.
