EASTERN ENTRIES FOR AMERICAN DERBY. New York. June 22. — There will Is-, at the least, two important stables represented in the American Derby at Clib-ago, and prob;.bly more. Mr. John Sanford. the owner of George Smith, after looking over the conditions of the race, said that he would make at least one entry, if not more, the number "•■pending upon the ready material on hand. George Smith would be a great attraction, and it is more than probable he will be in the Sanford list. Mr. Fox ha 11 P. Keene will positively have at least one starter in the Derby, and maybe more. "I think everyone who has a horse with a possible winning chance should encourage the Chicago enterprise." -aid Mr. Keene. "not only to stimulate the thoroughbred industry in this country, but in the cause of preparedness, foi without the thoroughbred blood in the army remount this country will go backward in the horse which is cs-ential to the welfare of any •ountrv at all times, and especially so in these trying days of warfare." Sam Hildreth. who trains the August Helmont horses, will put the question of sending a horse or two to Chicago up to Mr. Helmont. "The trouble is the race happens about the time we are getting ready for Saratoga and racing at Empire City." said Hildreth, "but if Mr. Helmont decides to send an entry for the Derby I will try and have him ready." Walt-r H. Jennings, who has the A. K. Macomber horses, among which is Star Hawk, will decide later whether to enter or not. "I hate to ship horses away and have them beaten through a heavy tr.-ok or sikness." remarked Mr. Jennings, "but I will consider si nding a representative, as the prize is worth winning." Capt. E. H. CaaM tt has nothing to enter with a winning chance against good horses. Neither has Mr. K. T. Wilson, but Mr. James Hutler has a candidate in Spur which may be found on the list of eligibles. It is certain there will be several entries from this section.
