C0NNAUGHT PARK MEETING IS OVER. All Smiles Victor in the Chateau Laurier Handicap — Best Steeplechase of the Year. Ottawa, Ont.. June 22. — The closing day of the Connaught Park meeting was largely attended, the crowd being the banner one of the meeting. The club provided an interesting program for the occasion, with the Chateau Laurier Handicap as the feature. E. J. ZollieolTor ran an entry in the race — All Smil-s and Phil l:igar--and the pair finished first and second, as named. Phil Ingar made the pace for five-eighths, then All Smiles ran into the lead and retained it to the finish. Thornhill and King Neptune, the two choices, were beaten off. A change in riders brought a wonderful improvement iu Pondage, which proved an easy winner in the Daughters of the Empire purse. In place of dropping ba.-k early Pondage forced the pace and in the homestretch drew away witli little effort. James Arthur, trainer of the winner, donated 0 of the purs" to tin- Daughters of the Empire fund and the club ■reseated 50 to the fund. The ataaplechaae was the liost run on the Canadian circuit this season. All of the six starters raced in a close bunch most of the way and at the end Chas. F. Grainger came from last position to beat Bamboo by a head. Befoie shipping from Ottawa to Hamilton IT. 6. Bedwell announced his intention of racing a division of his stable at the promised meeting to be given at the Hawthorne track in Chicago. Several other owners racing on this circuit will send their horses to Chicago. Harry Giddings today took out a license for his apprentice ride poll. Die latter is the lad that had the mount on Jabot the other day when that horse won. It was Hells first mount and he rode liis mount like a veteran. A notice was posted in the seretarys office warning owners not to tie a horses tongue down with wire. A violation of this rule will result in the revocation of tke trainers lieease. The following owners will ship from here to Montreal tomorrow: M. J. Daly. P. Hanlcy. H. B. Gorin. L. A. Sercgni and G. H. Morris. Captain W. J. Press has decided to send his horses from here to Fort Erie where they will be rested until the opening of that meeting. Gentlewoman has trained off and will not be raced again for several weeks. Jockey J. Williams was suspended for the remainder of the meeting yesterday by the starter for dbsolH-dicino at the p ist. Mortimer Mahoiicy. who has been in charge of the miitiiel department here, leaves tomorrow morning for Montreal, where be will spend a couple of days before continuing on to Atlantic Highlands, N. J., to join his family in summering there. Mutt Smart has decided to ship his stable of jumpers from here to Hamilton. George VY. Heard -niores good steeplechaser, Tropucoluui, will also be blupped to Hamilton.
