The Australian starter, Mr. Johnstone, has a successful method of dealing with unruly horses. He places a hurdle a few yards from one side of the rails, and puts the troublesome ones in between. Trainer James Rowe, of the Whitney stable at New York, wired trainer Albert Simons, who is in charge of the division of the Whitney horses racing in Canada, to give Bullion, the All Sold two-year-old, a trial at Hamilton in preparation for a stake to be run soon at New York. Bullion ran the first half in 48, but quit and went five-eighths in 1:03. The work was not considered satisfactory, and it is not probable that Bullion will be shipped to New York. The Townsville Australia Turf Club has had under consideration a most, unusual case. As stated by the Townsville Bulletin, tho horse Corntop is raced on lease by a foreign doctor in Cloncurry. The stewards, it is alleged, were asked by the doctor to protect his interest in the prizes in the event of Corntop winning a race. Corntop Avon two races, and on the hssee being told of the situation, it is understood he stated that acting under advice he bail refrained from sending the proportion of Corntops winnings to the owner under the impression that such payment would constitute a breach of the trading with the enemy act. It has not yet transpired what action the stewards decided on. A. J. Joyner has a valuable yearling coming over from England. He is a brown colt by Phaleron Last Hope. Phaleron. besides being a high-class stake winner in England, is a royally bred and successful sire. He is by Calliuule Mrs. Butter-wick. Last Hope, the dam of this yearling, is by St. Simon Mimi, out of Minuend by Minting. Thus it will be seen that this yearling combines in tho top crosses of his pedigree three of the best and most fashionable English strains. From his sire, Phaleron, lie receives the blood of Isonomy through G.-illinnlc, and from his dam, Last Hope, he receives the St. Simon and Minting strains. In addition to this he is said to be a particularly attractive individual. The Irish Field states that the biggest private stud in the United Kingdom if not in the world devoted to the rearing and breeding of the thoroughbred is comprised in the Melton Studs, belonging to Mr. Muskcr. At Thetford. Norfolk, there are about 11. ."00 acres of land, a large part of which is available in the form of paddocks. The auxiliary stud at Westerhain. Kent, covers an area of 350 acres. There are at these Melton Studs over 300 boxes, besides fifteen large sheds capable of holding over 100 animals. At the present moment the mares at the Melton Studs number 229. Including the stallions, there are over 270 thoroughbreds at the two stud farms, and by the end of the foaling season the total will be, in all probability, about 400.
