QUITE BRILLIANT RACING AT AQUEDUCT, t Short Grass Wins the Queens County Handicap and-Defeats Roamer in a Fast-Run Race. XowYork, July 1. No finer day could have been ordered for racing at Aqueduct today and the ten , thousand visitors were well repaid for the trip. The siecial attractions were the Great American Stakes, for two-year-olds, in which the juvenile stars of the east participated. Then there was the Queens County Handicap, for which the popular Roamer was favorite;, and the Winfield Steeplechase. The rivalry in tin; Great American was between Mr. Jielmont. who sent Hourless and Wood trap to the post; James Butler, represented by Ivory Black; It. T. Wilson, with Campfire; and A. K. Macomber with Ilollister. It was decidedly the best field of juveniles that has faced the starter in the east this year. The result was unexpected by the public generally, Campfire upsetting all calculations bv decisively beating Ivory Mack, the favorite. It was clear that the son of Star Shoot and Ivory P.ells could not cencede fifteen pounds to the Wilson colt. Neither Hourless nor Ilollister were factors, both being victims of crowding. Harry Payne Whitneys lionnie Witch and Ilollister both showed a good burst of speed at the beginning, but once Campfire; took the lead the race was practically . over. Campfire showed a liking for a straight course after being beaten the last time out by Arnold at Jamaica. Mr. Wilson won the Great American last year with Ormesedale. ISorrow was added to the Queens County Handicap at the last minute, with Joe Notter as his pilot, but he proved a failure The finish was just as sensational as that of the Brooklyn Handicap, won by Friar Rock. Short Grass dashed past the leaders at the finish and reduced the track record of 1:30 for one mile made by Sam Jackson last year. The race, today was run in 1:30. beating Sam Jacksons record by two-fifths of a second. Roamer strove hard for the victory, racing Sand Marsh and He Will to defeat in the first three-quarters only to be overtaken on the way home by Emil Ilerz imported horse Short Grass. It was the extraordinary pace; that aideel Short Grass to win, as it did Friar Rock. Roamer was considered the; most probable winner by the multitude and the horsemen, as he had worked extremely well for the race. The Harford Agricultural and Breeders Association toelay announced the stakes for its autumn meeting, which will be run as usual at Havre de Grace sometime in September. Entries will close August 7 with secretary Fred Rohborger, 30! Fulton street. Brooklyn. The events are the Havre ele Grace Handicap, ,500 added, one mile and an eighth, for three-year-olds and over; Chcsterbrook Handicap, ,500 added, for three-year-olds and over, one mile and a sixteenth, and the Eastern Shore Handicap, ,500 added, for two-year-olds, three-quarters. These events are; of a value that should attract the be;st horses in training. The course at Havre de Grace is one of the safest in the country. Sandusky, a bay colt belonging to August Belmont and highly thought of by the chairman of the Jockey Club, dropped dead this morning at Belmont Park after working a half mile in 50. He was by Hastings. Senor Gomez, son of former President Gomez of Cuba, was a visitor at Aqueduct today, the guest of Senor Tolon. owner of the horse Imperator. Notwithstanding that the rule concerning changes in equipment had been put intei effect, Campfire wore blinkers in the Great American. Though T. J. Healey, trainer of the horse, had been granted permission fer the; change on Campfire, the information was not posted on the official board. Before Emil Hers brought Short Grass to this country he refused a Mattering offer of 2,500 for the son eif Laveno and Outburst from the Prussian imperial stud at Graditz, where he was desired for stud purposes in breeding cavalry mounts. After Campf ires victory R. T. Wilson, his owner, made it known that he was suffering from a blind splint em the; occasion eif his last start at Jamaica, when he was defeated at oelds-on by Arnold. C. J. Fitzgerald has been given a twe weeks leave eif absence; by the Jockey Club in order that he; may serve as steward for the coming Chicago meeting.
