CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. CharlPS F. Hill will take the Mackay threo-ye.nr-. olds imported from France to Saratoga Monday. James W. McLclland has purchased the imported two-year-old Royal Writ from the C. K. G. Hillings establishment, and Kimball Patterson will train the colt for. his new owner. H. K. Kunpp has sold the sprinter Ynnkea Notions to Nate I.yer. This racer ranked with the countrys best short-distance racers two years back, but his unstable underpinning has reduced him to the selling plater division. Manager Tom Duggan, of the Hack River Jockey Club, reports applications for stalls for over 400 horses for the meeting to be held at Mount Royal Park, Montreal, from Saturday. July 1.1, to Saturday, July 22. Steeplechases will be catered to at the meeting. Congressman George W. Lofts Candy Lad is enjoying a let-up, because Max Hirsch feared all was not just right with his forelegs, and decided, in any event, it would do him no harm to rest until the opening of the Saratoga meeting. Mr. Lofts fast and hardsome filly Julialeon is also resting for the present, although she never has taken a step which would indicate soreness. The Irish Derby was run this week over the famous Curragh course in Ireland. Several English horses were entered for this race. II. Ellis Furore was the favorite and, ridden by Rohbins, won the race by three lengths from Colonel Hall Walkers King Robert, with Walter Griggs up. J. Dalys Brendo was third, witli Hunter in the saddle. The betting was: Furore. 2 to 1, King Robert, 11 to 4 and Brendo 0 to 1. Ten horses went to the post. After Gunbearer had refused to start with the others at Aqueduct, many horsemen commented on the sluggishness of horses that received their early racing education in England. In that country the start plays a less important part in the running of a race. Hero it is a big factor. Two notable examples at present racing in the United States are Short Grass and Gunbearer. The latter, however, is by far the more sluggish at the start. 1
