JUIET DAY AT SARATOGA " IIDDEN STAB PROVES BEST IN THE RUNNING OF THE SENECA STAKES. ennant Takes His Race with Ease Dervish Sold in the Morning and Bought Back When He Wins in the Afternoon Track Gossip. Saratoga Springs, X. Y., August 1. While there vas a noticeable decrease in the attendance at the rack today, there was no Inch of interest in the acing and, considering tlie off-day character of the ard, the patronage was generous. Many wlio had oine solely for the opening returned last night, and this morning to Now York, but they will augment the present regulars here again next Friday and Saturday. King and clubhouse action was more xtensive than yesterday, probably due to the more moderate fields in action in the various dashes! this lfteruoon. The ideal weather and bracing breezes that swept through the stand was a welcome relief after the intense heat of the preceding days. The outstanding number on the program from a monetary viewpoint was the Seneca Selling Stakes, for three-year-olds, at three-quarters, which went to 5. F. Johnsons English-foaled, though American-bred Hidden Star, by Burgomaster Black Venus. She was regarded with high favor, ruled a strong choice and received confident support. Buxton, who had the mount, allowed the Carolina Stables Favour to make the pace until straightened out for the stretch racing. Then he urged his mount along and she responded in willing fashion, took the lead when an eighth out. and won going away. I!omiie Tess came witli a rush in the final drive to overhaul the early pacemaker for second place. This was the fourteenth running of the Seneca Stakes, the condensed history of which is as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Considerable interest attached to the appearance of II. I. Whitneys Pennant and his meeting witli some fair opposition, which included Blind Baggage, making his initial eastern appearance. The Futurity winner was an outstanding choice, with about equal support for Prince of Como and Blind Baggage. The latter pair led Pennant for the lirst three-eighths, but after Notter called on the latter the race was virtually over, for the Whitney crack passed the leaders in a Hash and won as his rider elected. Blind Baggage held on in game fashion and easily outstayed the others for second place. The steeplechase brought with it three upsets. Two came when the riders of Kacebrook and Arch-dale were unseated, and the third when Rhomb, a well-backed favorite, was beaten by the liberally supported Web Carter. The latter showed the way throughout and fenced in splendid fashion and withstood Rhombs stretch challenge in gallant style. Sandow, which had been plodding along distantly, but avoiding hedge trouble, outstayed Abdon, the only other to finish, for third place. Doubts as to Dervishs ability to stay a mile accounted for a general lack of support for him, but the price quoters had more faith in his ability than the talent, for they held him at a short quotation. He showed the way from the rise of the barrier and won easing up. Entered for , he was promptly advanced to ,200 before H. Fink raised it an additional 00 and the horse was returned to his former owners stable. Acting on the theory that a mistake had been made yesterday in placing Ilegret. which was a factor in her failure. Harry Payne Whitney jokingly said to jockey Joe Notter as lie prepared to mount Pennant, "No orders today, Joe." II. Neusteter before the races this afternoon bought Gibraltar at private terms. Trainer A. J. Goldsborough is particularly sweet on Ticket, which he is training for Andrew Miller. ."As fine a colt as I ever handled," said the trainer, "and he is one of the improving kind." His next engagement will be in the Saratoga Special, in which he will meet all the juvenile cracks in these parts. "Had a hard trip," said trainer J. S. Ward this morning, "hut the horses stood the. shipment in fairly good style. It was frightfully hot along the way and we did not leave Hawthorne until late Sunday. Dodge and Franklin unloaded well and. after a -few days rest, will be as good as ever." With Dodge and Franklin came Sedan, Berlin, Solar Star, Norvic and two others. The saddle slipped badly on Fairweather during the running of the fifth race and E. Campbell was forced to dismount on the turn to avoid falling. R. J. Mackenzius horses, including Leo Skolny and Faux-Col, reached here last night. They shipped well. Jockey F. Murphy arrived from Hawthorne last night and will ride for Weber and Ward. There were many arrivals this morning from Louisville, including T. M. Murphy, owner of tiie Waldeck Farm. The price-quoting brigade here today was augmented by the arrival of many front Chicago, who operated at Hawthorne. At an informal meeting of several stewards of the Jockey Club the existing selling-race. Titles were discussed and a change is in contemplation, it is said, which will allow promiscuous claiming and not restrict it to those having an entry in the race. The Kentuekians began the day in auspicious fashion when J. O. Keenes Katenka, ridden by G. Byrne, who arrived this morning from Hawthorne, scored over Old Miss, another Kentuclry-owned filly. E. R. Bradley having acquired her recently at Windsor. After the finisli owner Keene wan kept on the anxious seat for a period in anticipation of a runup, the filly being entered for 00 and J. W. Hedrlck having requested the removal of the bandages from her forelegs. When bids were asked for, no ndvance came and she was led back to her stable. J. M. Henry, Jr. has purchased Dervish from H. Fink nnd that horse raced in his colors today. J. S. Ward was an arrival from Chicago and Jack Atkin came from the same place. Their horses are expected today.
