Top o th Morning Wins the Niagara Handicap in Which Vcnetia Has Bad Luck New Selling Race Rules at Windsor, Hamilton. Out.. August 1. The program furnished by the Hamilton Jockey Club this afternoon was In the main made up of selling races, in which well-matched fields went to the post. Keen contests were the result and a majority of the purses were won by well-backed horses. Peter Sheridan sent an entry to the post in the Niagara Handicap in Venetia and Back Bay and witli ii little better luck lie might have landed the purse with Venetia. The latter stumbled and went to her knees directly after the start and Collins grasped the mare around the neck to keep from falling. When Venetia got straightened out she closed up in resolute fashion nnd was fourth at the end, beaten a couple of lengths, Top o th Morning taking the race. J. Edwards, acting for the Mirasol Stable, has disposed of the two-year-old Little Wonder to 1. Hniphy. The latter will ship his new purchase to race over the half-mile tracks at Toronto. Jockey L. McAtee left for Saratoga tonight to join the stable of Thomas Clyde. At the conclusion of the Saratoga meeting McAtee will return to Ottawa. J. O. Burttschells, T. J. Shannons and the .Mirasol Stables horses were shipped to Fort Erie this morning. T. F. Buckley was an arrival from Chicago and will finish out the racing season on the Canadian circuit. W. II. Frey has purchased the two-year-old filly Belle C. from J. B. Respess. He has arranged to go with his string, which also includes Zin Del and Joe Stevie, to Toronto tomorrow. James Boden goes to Montreal tomorrow night with the jumper Chester Krum and the two-year-old Bright Sand. Schemer and Beauty Spot, owned by N. Macfarlane. will leave in the same car and will be rested at Blue Bonnets until the opening of that meeting. W. Wray will also leave for Montreal with Sarolta and Sacal. Among the new arrivals were Roscoe Goose, L. H. Adair and W. Bernie. William Garth found it necessary to destroy the jumper Nila this morning. The mare wrenched all the ligaments of her ankle when she fell in yesterdays steeplechase. apt. W. F. Presgrave will ship the division of the stable he is racing here to Blue Bonnets, where they will join the horses he has had resting up there all summer. Several of them will be sent to Ottawa for that meeting. William Garth, goes to Saratoga tomorrow night. J. W. Henley will take fourteen of the Garth horses to Fort Erie. Matt Smart, acting for Capt. C. IC. Rockwell. has purchased the-three-year-old The Carmet from W. Perkins. He will be put to jumping. Marianao was claimed for ,350 by S. Imis. The Windsor Jockey Club is making an effort to straighten out the selling race problem and at the next Windsor meeting new arrangements will bo made, with the hope it will eliminate the objectionable features in connection with these races. The managements announcement follows: With the endeavor to suit all who intend partici-i pating in the Windsor meeting, August 16-23, and with a view to trying out the different methods of equalization in selling and claiming races, the fol-I lowing changes will be made in the daily program: There will bo one selling race each day. Should there be any surplus run-up, the same will In; divided fifty per cent, thirty per cent, twenty per cent to the second third and fourth horses. All other ordinary selling races now in the book will be changed to claiming races, wherein the winner may be claimed for the entrance price, plus first money. The Windsor Jockey Club will add all surplus run-5 up monev received at the first meeting to two addi- tional selling stakes to be opened next year, the value of which will not be less than ,000 each in added money.
