MR. MACOMBERS HIGHLY IMPORTANT DEAL. Saratoga Springs, N. Y.. August 1. A. K. Ma-comber, the wealthy young Californian, whose colors were first seen last spring when Star Hawk ran second in the Kentucky Derby, and whose horses are now in training here, announced today that he had bought by cable the entire crop of yearling thoroughbreds, with the exception of four fillies, of J. B. Joel, owner of the famous Maiden Erlegh Stud in England. This band, which is of the choicest possible breeding, will leave England August 12 bv the steamer Minnehaha. There are seventeen in the consignment, of which eleven are colts. Two are by Polymelus. two bv Prince Palatine and six by Sunstar. Horses from the Maiden Erlegh Stud have swept the boards in England for several years, and J. B. Joel is acknowledged the leading breeder of thoroughbreds in England at the present time. His unbeaten Pommern is considered the best horse in the world today. Black Jester is another famous racer that came from the same stud. "Mr. Joel was exceedingly loath to part with his yearlings," said Mr. Macomber this afternoon, "and we have only been able to deal after months of negotiating. We finally had to permit him to except four fillies, which he wanted to keep for his stud and which he refused to set any price on."
