SARATOGAS BRILLIANT DAY CARD REPLETE WITH VALUABLE ATTRACTIONS DRAWS A BIG CROWD. Spur Gives Star Hawk Weight and a Beating: in the Travers Stakes Wcldship and Campfire Win Rich Stake Races. By J. L. Dempsey. Saratoga Springs, X. Y., August 5. In a furious stretch duel that aroused the large crowd in attendance to a frenzy. .Tames Butlers Spur, shouldering 112! pounds and ridden by J. Loftus. and A. K. Macombers English-bred Star Hawk, ridden by D. Connelly, came to the finish of the long-established Travers Stakes noses apart. Spur was awarded the race. Never did .T. Loftus show to better advantage and lie was forced to give his mount the utmost benefit of his skill to get home in advance. Star Hawk was by no means disgraced. He struggled along in courageous fashion and was gaining on the winner right at the end after it seemed as if Spur had him thoroughly disposed of. The westerners pinned their hopes to Franklin and the Ward colt flattered his backers during the early stages of the race by running forwardly, but after three-quarters had been traversed he shortened his stride and soon after rounding into the stretch lie failed badly. "The changes of tracks from the hard courses in Kentucky and Chicago to the loose sand soil here bothered him," said trainer .1. S. AVaril. The Travers Stakes was the feature of a splendid card staged this afternoon by the Saratoga Association and it attracted an attendance far in excess of that of the opening day. The Travers dates back to 1804 and is the oldest stake contested for annually in this country. Its history, briefly summarised, is as follows: Year Winner. Wt. .lockey. Val. As a secondary feature, the Sanford Memorial Stakes served, and it was annexed by It. T. Wilsons Campfire, which showed a smart improvement over his former race here by carrying his 125 pounds in brilliant fashion and leading a good band of youngsters to the finish. Rickety landing second money, with The Knocker third. Hollister and Rickety were the ones most supported for the race, but Hollister showed to poor advantage. The Sanford Memorial, dedicated to the memory of General Stephen B. Sanford, was run for the fourth time today, and its brief history follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Vnl. Weld-ship was successful in the same fixture last year. As the entries for the North American Steeplechase usually include the best timber-toppers in training, the followers of this fascinating branch of the sport are assured an excellent contest, as a glance at the following condensed history of this stake will reveal: Year. Cochrans colors were victorious in the opener when Royal Martyr slipped through along the inner rail to beat Miss Puzzle. Another stirring finish attended the fifth race when Cliff Field and Goldcrest Boy fought it out in desperate fashion, Goldcrest Boy getting up to win in the last stride. It marked the first victory for young Mr. Schorr during the meeting. Hal Price Headley, president of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Horsemens Association, was an arrival today and will remain until after the meeting of the horsemens committee here August 14. August Belmont. Jr., came over with a party of guests from Narraganset to witness todays racing. Continued on second pace. SARATOGAS BRILLIANT DAY. Continued from first page. Fred Burlew, who recently returned from France, stated this morning that he had received word from jockey Frank ONeill, now at San Sebastian, Spain, that the twenty-five racers owned by W. K. Vanderbilt and trained by W. B. Duke are winning their full share of the races. At present racing is going on for four days weekly and ONeill has met with much success in Spain. "Horseflesh has gone up considerably," factitiously remarked W. R. Midgley, after Golden Bantam, winner of yesterdays fiftli race, had been advanced to 82,100. "The auctioneer had hard work in getting a bid of 50 for the filly at New Orleans," concluded Midgely. Louis Tauber will leave tonight for Louisville, where he will assume charge of the English-bred youngsters owned by Jefferson Livingston, with a view to breaking and giving them their early racing lessons. At present there are only six in the barn, but fourteen more are shortly expected from England to join the others. Jockey Tuckey, who rode Chupadero. the added starter in the North American Steeplechase, escaped injury when he fell at the last hedge. His mount was running in a contending iiosition at the time of the mishap. j C. K. G. Billings acted as one of the stewards during the running of the steeplechase. Charles Landsale was among the visitors this . afternoon. lie spoke glowingly of Havana prospects for next winter. II. Neustcter, who has jockey L. Lykes under contract, has had several flattering offers for the transfer of the contract. Jockey J. Brown suffered a three-days suspension from the stewards after a rare yesterday for cutting across in front of the others soon after the start. After Cnmpfiros winning effort in the Sanford Memorial, jockey Schutt inger, who had the mount on the Wilson colt in his previous race, was suspended by the stewards for the present meeting and his case referred to the Jockey Club for further action.
