TURF ITEMS FROM AUSTRALASIA. The Australian Jockey Tubs added money for the current spring meeting at Randwiek is 2S,-500. which, though 9,250 1ok than last year, is still eminently satisfactory. In 1914. however, the total was 01,750, so that the contributions by the premier club of New South Wales to patriotic funds are telling on the stakes. It is unusual for a bookmaker to refuse money from a backer, except for the reason that odds are requested which the man with the bag is unable to concede. This actually happened, however, at a recent meeting in the metropolitan area, says a Pertli writer. A returned soldier desired to back a horse, which, by the way. was sold during the week for a few pounds, but the bookmaker, instead of taking the mans money, explained .that the equine had no chance of winning and advised the soldier to keep his money. The incident serves to show that the average bookmaker is. a more honorable fellow th.m he is credited to be. Sydnee Referee.
