GREAT EORT ERIE RACING TREMENDOUS CROWD TURNS OUT TO VIEW THE DAYS CONTESTS. Boots Captures the Dominion Handicap and Makes a New Canadian Record for a Mile and a Quarter Track Gossip. Fort Erie, Ont., August 5. Oscar Lewisohns colt Boots figured in a sensational performance in winning the Dominion Handicap, the feature race of the opening day of the Niagura Racing Associations final meeting of the year at Fort Erie this afternoon. Boots carried 114 pounds, forced a terrific early pace and finally won going away by a length and a half from Rancher, which, in turn, beat Borrow a length for second place. The mile and a quarter was run in 2:02 and represents a new Canadian record, supplanting the mark of 2:03 made by Star Charter in winning the same race at Fort Erie on July 27, 1912, with 119 pounds up. The pace was fast from the start, witi Borrow playing the part of pacemaker. Fair-brother never permitted the Whitney horse to get away from liim and the two raced necks apart for a mile and an eighth. Rancher also showed a fine performance. He closed up with a great burst of speed through the homestretch and passed the tiring Borrow in the last fifty yards. The Dominion Handicap was instituted in 1910 and has always attracted the best handicap horses on both sides of the border, resulting in fast and hard fought contests. The brief history of the race follows: Year. Winner. A.Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. 1910 Jack Frost ...0 117 G. ArchibaldS7,000 2:04 1911 Flint Rock ...3 105 E. Boots will remain here until the close of the meeting, when he will be shipped to Saratoga. There was much activity in the selling races and during the afternoon three horses changed hands. T. G. Bussey claimed Martin Casea for ,230, C. N. Freeman took Resign for ,150 and W. O. Weant claimed the Canadian-bred horse. Moss Fov for ,050. A tremendous gathering turned out to witness the sport. It was an ideal day, the weather being warm and the track at its best. Well-matched tields went to the post in a majority of the races and keen contests resulted. Matt Feakes has shipped Mrs. L. A. Livingstons horses to Windsor. Other owners who shipped from Hamilton to Windsor were G. A. Brvson and E. B. Elkins. There were many distinguished visitors at Fort Erie today. Joseph Rhinock stopped off to take in the opening days sport. He was on his way from New York to Cincinnati. When he arrived at the course he lost no time in hunting up his friend Jerome B. Respess. Mr. Rhinock has lost none of his interest in racing, although he is not the frequenter of the race courses that he was some dozen years back. Harry Laudeninn. who went to Chicago after the Kentucky season closed, was an arrival. New York was represented by Julius Subendorf, "Little Pete" Ohristenseii and William McKenna. Charles O. Smith. Allie Louder and .1. Mclntyre came over from Hamilton to witness the running of the Dominion Handicap. George M. Hendrie, president of the Windsor Jockey Club, was also present. Windsor promises to have the greatest meeting in the history of racing at that course. Several stables are expected from .Saratoga. I at Civill writes from Windsor that over 1U0 horses are ou the ground awaiting the opening. Four carloads arrived from Chicago, one from Tijuana and two from Hamilton. The horses of .!. C. Ferriss and J. Randolph were included in the Tijuana shipping. The press agent at Windsor is evidently not on to his job. He sent out a story of the purses at Windsor being 00, when, as a matter of fact, no purse will be of less value than 00, with an overnight handicap of ,000 every day. James Arthur has obtained first call on jockey It. McDermott for the rest of the Canadian season. McDermott recently rode for the James Butler stable in New York. Edward Whyte left for Saratoga yesterday to attend the Edenwold yearlings sale held this afternoon. During Ids absence the J. S. Hendrie horses were saddled by Barry Littlefield. The stable of .1. W. Fuller, in charge of D. E. Stewart, and the W. A. Carter horses arrived from Windsor this morning. The stake blanks for the fixtures to be run at the Ontario Jockey Clubs fall meeting at Woodbine, Toronto, were distributed among the horsemen today. Laurel stake blanks also arrived and Joseph McLennan, who is looking after the interests of the Maryland State Fair here, reports liberal entries being made by the horsemen.
