HURON HANDICAP TO SPUE BUTLERS GOOD COLT GIVES MUCH WEIGHT AND A BEATING TO FRANKLIN. Port Light Defeats Silica Crimper "Wins in a Canter Golden Eos Gives the Kentucky Stable a Race Track Talk. By .7. L. Deinpsoy.l Saratoga Sprints, N. Y., August 22. .Tames Butlers good colt Spur today made amends for the defeat that Dodge recently administered to him, by decisively disposing of Franklin, a stable -mate of Dodge and did it in such easy fashion as to increase trainer McCormacks doubt, as to whether Dodge is Spurs master. Spur carried 130 pounds to Franklins 101 and had a bit; margin on the western colt at the end. The colts met in the Huron Handicap of ,000 at one mile and three sixteenths with Tea Caddy the only other starter. The latter raced into a big lead at once but after going three quarters was done and finished a distant third. The Huron dates back to 1901. the list of its winners and other details being as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. 1901 The Rhymer 98 II. Cochrnn.,000 2:03 1902 Sombrero 120 T. Loftus... 1,425 1:58 No racing in 1911 and 1912. Distance was 1 1-4 miles in 1914. Aside from the Huron Handicap, the other five races were of the overnight variety and, while some of them furnished interesting sport, the program on the whole was ordinary. The imported Crimper was in a soft spot in the second race, particularly so after Chiclets withdrawal. Crimper was held at prohibitive odds and justified them by the easy manner in which he won. The Snnford following went down hard in the opener through the failure of Silica, which succumbed to Port Light. T. 0. McDowells Blrtnchita threatened for a time to break the ice for that owner, but she gave way in the stretch racing. Phil T. Chinns colors were successful for the first time at tho meeting, when his imported Golden Fox got home first in a close finish with Bonnie Lassie. Transit furnished an upset in the fifth, when he led for the entire way. Friends of Phil J. Dwyer, president of the Brooklyn aud Queens County jockey clubs, tendered him an anniversary birthday dinner at Arrowhead tonight. Among those present were Thomas "Welsh, II. Watson, James Butler, II. F. Brievogel, Clii.un-cey Olcott, James Flemming, Thomas Costi;;an, R. A. Johnson, George Bull, G. F. Johnson, Chs rles Quinn, G. A. Cochran. E. It. Bradley, Price Me-Kinney, John Stanford, Andrew Miller. Tho.aas Lally, T. C. McDowell, Frank McKee, John "Walters, John Cavanagh, Gwyn Tompkins, F. Yon Stade and Mars Cassidy. Harry F. Breivogel, who will assist Mutt J. Winn in tho management of the Laurel track, jin-nouueed this afternoon that the additional stabling completed at the Maryland track will supply room for 1,200 horses and will dispense with the necessity of quartering horses at the Benning track and using a special horse train to transport them daily to Laurel. Other improvements include the addition of six additional pari-mutuel machines. There will be forty cashiers. Xo purse will be less than 00 in value. E. B. Bradley i:; among those who have made entries to the stakes. John Stanford is the biggest nominator. Following Port Lights victory in the opener, he was advanced by George Land from an entered price of ,800 to ,705 and bought in. Silica was claimed for ,100 by Mrs. J. Shilling, represented in the race by Conning Tower. I. M. Iledrick also had a claim in for the filly. Eight yearlings and two two-year-olds owned by Andrew Milled, will be shipped tonight 3ii the big consignment leaving for Gravesend. The youngsters are variously owned and will make up six carloads. Frank Midgley, who recently returned from England, where he went to bring over some thoroughbreds for G. A. Cochran, was a visitor at the track this afternoon. He stated that Die would again be in New Orleans the coming winter with some of the Cochran horses and race theim there. "One failure will not keep us from trying again," said trainer James Rowe, when asked if tne Whitney Stable would again try to win the Elentucky Derby. "We will certainly send some of our good colts to Louisville next spring and hope to repeat the success we scored with Regret and Borrow in the spring of 1914." Saudmnn II. and Pandean have been sold by J. O. Talbott to Lewis W. Garth at private- terms. The threatened railroad strike is disturbing the Kentucky owners here and some of them are making hurried preparations for departure, to insure their reaching Lexington for the racing there. Starter James Milton came down from Montreal to confer with II. D. Brown on matters pertaining to Havana racing and returned tonight to. Montreal. Mr. Milton is enthusiastic over Havana prospects for the coming winter. Unless J. S. Ward succeeds in disiposing of Dodge, Franklin, Solar Star and Norvie :it private terms the quartette of racers will be offered for sale by auction on Saturday next. Tlie sale is made to close the partnership between Mr. Ward and A. Weber. The former is not overanxious to sell, but Mr. Weber wants to retire. Several prospective purchasers are negotiating for Dodge and his transfer may occur at any time. Lawrence Jones, who is extensively interested in Kentucky racing, was an arrival here this afternoon and will remain until the close. Trainer William C. Clancy, in charge of the Wicklitfe Stable horses owned by Corrigan and Mc-Kinney, stated this afternoon that the entire aggregation here numbering seventeen would be shipped at the close of the Saratoga meetiug; to Kentucky to engage in the fall racing there.
