BELMONT PARK THRIVING JACK MOUNT WINS THE MINEOLA STAKES BEFORE A BIG CROWD. Prince of Como and Air Man Score a Double for Mr. Cochran Louvois Proves Himself a Promising Steeplechaser. Xew York. August 30. Todays feature race at Belmont Ill k, tin; Mineola Selling Stakes, for two-year-olds at three-quarters, was contested by a field of only four. Straight Forward being withdrawn. II resulted in an easy vietory for W. R. "oes colt Jack Mount over Fairy Wand anil Wistful. The winner was easily best. He ran in a forward position from tin? start and easily passed Fairy Wand in the final quarter. He swerved out liadly at the quarter post and caused Fairy Wand to also go wide, hut the latter appeared beaten at the time. The stewards considered the matter, after hearing the patrol judges report, but allowed the result to stand as the horses bad finished. The colors of 5. A. Cochran were successful in two races when Prince of Como and Air Man scored. The former won from some good sprinters in the third, all of which were in receipt of weight from the Disguise colt. Inia Frank and Hank ODay were both making their first attempt over the Belmont Park course and raced creditably. The former would have been more dangerous bad she not swerved out badly when opposite the eighth post. Louvois proved easily best in the steeplechase. Outpaced in the early running. lie moved up fast and steadily in the second turn of tin field ami won in a manner that showed lie probably will beat better horses. The yearlings belonging to A. IS. Spreckels arrived from California today in charge of trainer C. W. Carroll. They will be disposed of at auction at Sheepshead Bay in the near future and are an exceptionally good looking band. James Osborne, who olliciated as starter at the meetings this summer in Northwestern Canada, was a visitor today. He reported the racing there this year as being highly successful. John Sanford shipped his good sprinter I.cochares to his farm at Amsterdam, X. 1., after the horse won tin first race yesterday. W. K. Midgley states that a number of the Cochran two-year-olds will be sold after the Laurel meeting in October. Those left will be reserved for next years racing. Quite a few of the Cochran youngsters, sold at New Orleans last winter, proved to be useful racers. J. II. Madigiu, president of the Niagara Rac-ing Association at Fort Erie, was a visitor today after a short trip to Buffalo from Saratoga. Thomas Welch will depart for France Saturday and the division of tin; stable of L. Wood, which lias been under his care, will be turned over to A. A Joyner. The M. L. Schwartz horses, formerly trained by Mr. Joyner. will lie transferred to W. II. Karrick. who will train them In the future. The condition bo:ks of the Havre de Trace meeting wore distributed among the hcrsenicii today. Archie Zimmer is recovering from a slight operation, which he submitted to after his return from the Hawthorne meeting last mouth. Fred iailon will, in the future, look after the riding engagements of jockey E. Haynes. Several of John Sanfords horses will be sold at auction here Thursday. September 7. Jack Mount was well thought of early in the year but, except for winning one race in the spring, he had not scored until today. He is not a thoroughly sound colt.
