MUDDlt RACING AT OTTAWA DOWNPOUR AFFECTS THE GOING MATERIALLY, BUT GOOD RACING PREVAILS. English-Bred Russell Square Takes the Feature Race of the Day in a Close Finish Good Shot Also Wins for Owner Hendrie. Ottawa, Ont., August 30. Mud runners had their first opportunity of the meeting at Conmiught Iark this afternoon. Heavy rain, that fell during the night, made the going muddy. There were but few withdrawals on account of track conditions and a majority of tin races furnished interesting contests, the finish of the fourth being particularly close. This race was the feature of the program and was won by Sir John Hendries imported gelding Russell Square, which came from a long way back to beat Eulogy by a nose in the closing stride. The Hendrie stable scored another victory when Good Shot won the mile race for Canadian-bred horses. Robinson, who had the mount en Russell Square, also rode Good Shot and she won in a canter. Dehaven, the favorite, was handicapped by the muddy going and could do no better than finish a beaten-off third. Mortimer Mahoney distributed among the horse-ineii stake blanks for the fixtures to be run at Pimlico next fall. The list of events includes the Pimlico Fall Serial Handicaps. There are three of these and the one entrance fee of 0 entitles an entry to run in all three or them. Each or the serials has ,000 in added money. Permission was given J. Russell by the stewards to carry seven pounds overweight on Joe Gaiety in the steeplechase. There will be a meeting of the stewards of the Canadian Racing Associations in the clubhouse at the Blue Bonnets course on Wednesday next. Jockey A. Pickens has been engaged to ride the three-year-old Dix Rogers in the Kings Plate, to be run at Blue Bonnets. News was received by William Garth that his son Lewis is the father of a daughter, born at Charlottesville. Va., a few days ago. Previous to the races this afternoon the stewards had jockeys Metcalf and Parrington before them, asking for an explanation of their riding of Top o th Morning and Grumpy. Metcalf was told that had lie been beaten on Top o th Morning the day that he won he probably would have been suspended. Parrington claimed that lie followed instructions on Grumpy and that the horse was deficient in speed. The officials are far from satisfied with the work of some of the riders and it would not be at all surprising to find some of them brought up with a sharp turn. William Northey, the guiding spirit of the Montreal Jockey Chin, was a visitor at Connaught Park this afternoon. Mr. Xortheys mission here was to assign stabling accommodations to the horsemen who will race at Blue Bonnets. He reports that there are already 175 horses at the track awaiting the opening of the meeting. Among I hem are the stables of W. F. Presgrave, J. K. L. Boss. K. V. Carman. W. Garth, E. J. Crawford, X. Macfarlane. G. M. Hendrie, E. W. Moore, .Mrs. L. A. Livingston and I. A. Campbell. Before leaving lie arranged with Joseph McLennan to receive entries at Ottawa oi. Friday for the opening dnys races at Blue Bonnets. Samuel Louis purchased the plater Duke of Dunbar at private sale after he won yesterday. L. A. Phillips has secured the club privileges at the Essex Park course and will be in charge of that establishment. He has secured the furnishings, including the silverware, etc.. of the Southern Club at Hot Springs, for the clubhouse at Essex Park and it is his intention to equip the latter in palatial style. Mr. Phillips left for Detroit this morning. He was accompanied by Smiley Cor-bett, who is on his way to Chicago. It is said that Frank J. Bryan will be the presiding steward at Essex Iark and that Harry Morrissey will do the starting.
