CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. Hodman Wanamaker has registered racing colors with the Xational Steeplechase and Hunt Association. This means, another distinguished and valuable recruit for the cross-country sport. Two important additions have been made to the already strong string of thoroughbreds which are being trained by Louis Feustel. These are Defence and Star Finch, two Star Shoot two-year-olds purchased from John K. Madden. Secretary Frank Bryan reports that thirty-one entries have been received for the Erdeiiheiin Cup, to be run for at the White Marsh Valley meeting. By courtesy of J. E. Widener the Lynnewood Challenge Cup will also be rim at White Marsh Valley. A dispatch from Dublin, Ireland, of yesterday says: Richard Croker. former head of the Tammany organization in Xew York, was operated upon here today for an affection of the facial lione, which injured his eyesight. The operation was successful. In a rough estimate of the operations of the Brighton Stable, George Odom said that the investments for horses amounted to 8,000, the sales amounted to 0,000 and the stable earnings to about 0,000, which amounted to about the outlay for expenses. Charles F. .Hill, who lias the Mackay Imported colts under lease, did not have any luck with them at Saratoga. Esprit Gaulois went amiss and has but recently recovered, while Trouble Fete grabbed one of his quarters and has been on tlte shelf, too, until recently. Trainer James Fitzsimmons appears likely to have his hands full the coming winter. He has arrived at Belmont Park with the eighteen horses in training from Saratoga, which are now stabled at Belmont Park, and he lias twenty yearlings at Graves-end which he will begin trying this week. James McLaughlin took back to Xew York from. Saratoga but one thoroughbred, the three-year-old chestnut filly Celandria, as Onar Lewisohn sold Watercress II. to B. F. Canaan during the Saratoga meeting. In referring to the meeting just closed Mr. McLaughlin remarked: "I have been attending the race meetings at Saratoga for many years, but I have no hesitation in saying that this, meeting has been greatly ahead of all that have preceded it." There are already seven race tracks in Montreal and its suburbs, including Kempton Course, which opened Monday. Gossip is going the rounds locally of an eighth track to be built there. The location for the proposed new plant is said to be within one hundred yards of the entrance of the Mount Boyal course. Local men of standing are said to be behind this newest venture, who claim to have a charter which permits them to hold running races. Xo meeting at the new track for this season is contemplated, however.
