THE FINN DEFEATS SHORT GRASS. Takes the Manhattan Handicap Under Heavy Weight Sanford Horses Sell Well. New York, September 7. The Manhattan Handicap at one mile, for all ages, featured todays program at Belmont Park. The entire card was of much better quality than the average mid-week offering and brought about some interesting racing. A shower, which fell prior to the running of the first race, made the track muddy, but it was only the lower end of the track that was really affected, the soil in the straightaway chute being practically as dry as before the rain. The sun came out after the second race and shone all afternoon. The Finn accounted for the Manhattan Handicap, wearing Jacoba, the pacemaker, down in the stretch and winning by two lengths from Short Grass. The Finn was carrying the top weight of Bio pounds and ran a fine race. Fenmouse won the Ccdarhiirst Selling Handicap over some good racers. True as Steel sot a fast pace until in the final eighth, where he tired badly and was passed by Fenmouse and Virile. The latter came from a long way back. The steeplechase went to Quel Bonheur, which wore Bill Dudley down in the last few strides. T. Chandler, who had the mount on Badinage, suffered a fracture of both legs when the horse fell with liiiu. Chandler is a son of Nick Chandler, old -time steeplechase rider, who was well known on every track in the country. Henry T. Oxnard of the Blue Ridge Stud at Up-perville. Aa., has bought the English mares Autumn and Arlette, and the latter, with a colt foal by Catmint, is now at her new home. Autumn is a four-year-old by St. Frusquin. She is with foal by the Cambridgeshire winner Adam Bede. Arlette is a five-year-old daughter of Robert l.e Diable Quintessence. J. W. May and Mrs. J. Carson lodged claims for Fuzzy Wuzzv after that horse won the second race and "the former secured him for 00. William P. Orr, who purchased Leorhares at the Sanford sale, is a well-known business man of Piqua, Ohio. John Powers will train the horses Mr. Orr bought. The horses in training of John Sanford were offered at public auction at Belmont Park today. Twelve were sold for 4.515, an average of ,050 each.
