BLUE BONNETS HEAVILY PATRONIZED. Great Assemblage Sees Grumpy Defeat King Neptune in the Earl Grey Cup. Montreal. Que.. September 9. The Montreal Jockey Club provided patrons of Blue Bonnets with a splendid program this afternoon. The attendance was the largest of the meeting. While the fields were small, they were well matched and most of the finishes were attended with much contention. There were two stakes on the program, the Karl Grey Cup at one mile and a quarter, and the Hendrie Memorial Steeplechase, over the three mile course. The Karl Grey Cup furnished a splendid contest, in which Grumpy beat the odds-on favorite. King Neptune, by a scant half length after a long and hard stretch drive. King Neptune was forced extremely wide when entering the homestretch by Thornhill or the result might have bet n different. Robert Oliver, thanks to a skillful ride by Fred Williams, won the Hendrie Memorial Steeplechase. He was saved in the early running and. when Williams made his move, he responded resolutely. Robinson showed to gooil avantage when he landed The Masquerader a head in advance of Top o th Morning in the seven-eighths handicap. It was the general impression that he could have won with either of the first two horses. Eight claims were filed for Monocracy after he won the closing race on Friday and, in the drawing, C. E. Richards secured him. Prime Mover came out of his race in bad condition and fears are expressed by his trainer that he will be unable to get him to the post again this year. A. C. Niehaus. II. Xeusteter and A. G. Alexandra have wired from Windsor asking for stalls at Dor-val. Sheridan Clarke announced to the horsemen that lie would be at Blue Bonnets on Monday to receive entries for the handicap to be run on the opening day at Dorval. Dainrosch came out of his last race in bad condition. The horse ruuttircd the middle tendon of his off foreleg and will be retired for the year. The mare Southern Maid, owned by the Messrs. Davies of Toronto, which finished second in the Futurity, is in foal to Calgary. The latter was thrown out of training during the Hamilton meeting and no attempt will be made to race him again. Thomas J. Bird who owns Audrey Austin, a half sister to Southern Maid, has about concluded negotiations to dispose of her for a broodmare. William Garth will take over D. Raymonds Chester Kriim and the Canadian-bred Reddest at the conclusion of the Dorval meeting. They will be shipped to the Garth farm at Charlottesville, Va., and during the winter months Reddest will be schooled over the jumps. William Stormont has also turned Lady Butterfly over to Mr. Garth, who will race her through the field at the Maryland meetings. Ilarrv Shannon, who is gathering a stable to race in" Cuba, has purchased tier plater Key Oakwood from Andrew G. Blakcley. Shanuon will purchase several other horses next fall. The entry of the mares Sarolta and Ada Anne have been barred by the stewards on aecouat of their fractious behavior at the post. Jockey Warringtons suspension has been ordered continued for the rest of the Canadian season. Mattie Smart will ship his stable of jumpers to Havre de Grace on Monday and R. F. Carman will leave witli his horses for Laurel on Tuesday. Frank J. Brvan will leave for New York Monday night, but will return to Canada for the Woodbine meeting at Toronto. W. Snyder has been offered the position of starter at Kompton Park. R. L. Baker returned to Lexington last night. Mr. Baker has several horses at Toronto, in charge of Edward Trotter, awaiting the opening of the "Woodbine meeting.
