1 FREQUENTLY ENGLANDS LEADING OWNER. During the present century no colors have been more prominent that those of Mr. .7. 15. Joel. The South African magnate commenced in a modest way, and his first success, which was celebrated on May Day sixteen years ago, was recorded in a Two-Year-Old Maiden Plate at Newmarket by Discoverer, a son of Pioneer, ridden by S. Loates. Mr. Joel won three further races during his initial season, and when the statistics were drawn up it was revealed that he had some 2,500 pounds to his credit. The following year he did but moderately, winning only two events, worth 700 pounds or so; but in 1902 he carried off nine races of the total value of 4.300 pounds. A vear later Mr. Joel finished ninth in the winning owners list, with nearly 12,000 pounds to his account. It was during this season that Mr. Joel achieved the first of his fairly numerous classic triumphs, through Our Lassie, which won the Oaks from the future Cesarewitch heroino Hammerkop. The subject of our sketch continued to do tolerably well during the years immediately following, hut in 190S he easily beat his previous best, heading the table with an aggregate of over 20,000 pounds. His most successful possession that season was Your Majestv, which won four races in five attempts, among the prizes captured being the St. Leger, which the son of Persimmon won from AVliite Eagle and Santo Strato, with the sensational Derby and Oaks winner, Signorinetta, down the course. The horses bearing the "black jacket, scarlet cap" were again well to the fore in 1911. in which vear Mr. Joel won no fewer than thirty-five races, worth nearly that number in thousands of pounds. Even so, he occupied only second position to Lord Derby, who totalled over 42,000 pounds. This was, of course, "Sunstars year." This good son of Sun-dridge not only won the Two Thousand in the fastest time on record, but accounted for twenty-five rivals in the Derby, which lie won practically on three legs, developing lameness in the course of the race. This was Sunstars final appearance on a race course. Another good year for Mr. Joel was 1913, at the conclusion of which he was for the second time at the top of the list, his thirty-one triumphs bringing in just over 25,000 pounds. The chief contributor was his filly Jest, which Avon both the One Thousand and Oaks. The same "double," by the way, Avas landed a twelvemonth later, through the instrumentality of Princess Dorrie, and Mr. Joel once again scored over all competitors for the championship among oAvners, his total for the season exceeding 30,000 pounds. It may be noted that another Oaks winner OATncd by him av.is Glass Doll, which defeated Laomedin, Hasty Girl and others in 1907. The most recent classic victor owned by Mr. Joel Avas Rlaek Jester, AVhieh scored in the last "real" St. Leger that ever Avas that in the fall of 1914. The animal in question Avas a son of Polymelus, and in the hands of AValter Griggs he disposed of the erratic Kenny-more and sixteen others.
