CHURCHILL DOWNS RACING FAN G. "WINS THE GOLDEN ROD SELLING-STAKES AFTER A LONG POST DELAY. i Samuel E. Meyer Fails His Confident Backers and Is Beaten by Turco Hawthorn Takes a Race at Last One Dead Heat. Louisville, Ky., September 30. A tedious post delay came in the Golden Rod Selling Stakes, which, from :i monetary standpoint, featured todays racing at Churchill Downs, due to the frac-tiousness of Phoeion. The latter, soon after his arrival at the barrier, kicked and landed on jockey 0. Hunt, astride of Milbrey, and it incapacitated him from filling the engagement. The colt was led back to the paddock and mounted by .T. Callahan. Later, lhocion partly demolished the outer fence. When tltey were finally dispatched, after a delay of twenty-three minutes, it was to n good send-off, witli Fan O. showing slightly in the van. She was immediately displaced by Opportunity, which held sway until rounding into the stretch, where Fan O. moved up and, in a hard drive, outstayed MHbrey to win by a scant half length. Walter H. Pearee and lhocion, both of which were accorded substantial support, were never factors in the running. The stake was worth ,400 net to the winner. The cool weather which has been prevailing here, served as a drawback to the drying out of the track and, while the oval showed surface dryness, it was moist in spots and lacked its usual springiness. The racing was spirited in the main and was witnessed by a large crowd. The betting was ample and those lucky enough to land on the winners, received substantial returns. Several outstanding disappointments gave the big operators a big setback. The worst they experienced came when Samuel R. Meyer, backed to the exclusion of the others in the third race, succumbed to Turco by a small margin. A poorly judged ride on the part of jockey Connelly was held to blame for Samuel It. Meyers failure. Kill Joe was the one most favored in the opener, and he was soundly beaten by Hawthorn, Sayonnrra and Skiles Knob. The first dead-heat, that has been noted on a Kentucky track in a long time, came in the fifth race, when Bayberry Candle and Typhoon finished so closely together thnt the judges eonld not separate them. The pair fought it out strenuously through the stretch. Money Maker headed the others. The owners agreed to divide the purs;. Irimero came out of his last race in a bad way and will have to be shel veil-for the rest of the Kentucky racing. After Tureos victory ho was bid up 00 over his entered price of 00 by II, Fink, but was bought in. The program book for the first seven days racing at Latonia was distributed to owners this morning. Jockey F. Murphy had to absent himself from the saddle this afternoon in order to be with his wife, who is seriously ill. After Fan G.s stake victory she was advanced from ,400 to ,000. but retained with an advance of . N. F. Dortch and II. Perkins were the bidders. Nttie Walcutt, which J. M. Henry, Jr., claimed yesterday for ,400, was sold by him to K. X. Klkius at an advance over the price ha paid for her.
